Mer de Noms Reviews:
A Sleeper Hit with Staying Power
2008-08-23 - When I first heard the voice powering the lyrics of "Judith," I had never heard of Tool. My ears were virgin to this voice, this driving, compelling voice that was soft and emotional, and then powerfully and seemingly sincerely angry. I had a rule about buying CD's back then: I had to hear and enjoy at least two tracks before I considered it for purchase. "Judith" was powerful and exciting, but it wasn't quite enough for me. Suddenly, I heard violins under a soft, enchantingly melancholy acoustic guitar hook: "3 Libras." I bought the album immediately.
Mer de Noms (yes, the 's' is silent) is an album that is musically tight and takes you through eleven tracks exploring all facets of Maynard James Keenan's voice, alongside the the writing and composing prowess of lead guitarist/founder Billy Howerdel. My only complaint is that the album peters off with "Over," a track that leaves something to be desired. I had thought that "Brena" made a much stronger closing track.
This album is dripping with brooding, melancholic anger, and the musicianship required to convey those emotions well. Mer de Noms is an album that should not be overlooked by alternative rock fans, especially fans of Smashing Pumpkins and of course, Tool.
