Aaliyah Reviews:
Aaliyah On Top Classic R&B Fashion!
2009-10-17 - This is a classic album to cherish for decades and decades. This 2004 Edition features Aaliyah plus bonus tracks "Miss You", "Don't Know What To Tell Ya" and "Erica Kane". While there are numerous versions including the German Diamond Edition, and 2007 white cover artwork, this one is definitely a phenomenal purchase for the price, overall package, and contents. Aaliyah is alive in spirit, her music is one in a million and she is the highest ever most exalted R&B music artist ever to have made such an impact in the industry and in so many lives. This album is her words brought to life, her visions, her thoughts, emotions, but most of all the positive, and life-lesson experiences in a "unique" vocal pitch never harsh on the ears but soft, seductive, and almost addictive. Enjoy a classic masterpiece to cherish, embrace, and listen to over and over!!! Aaliyah transformed the music industry of R&B in more ways than one. She not only introduced a different sound in her vocals, but impacted a world wide array of people.
"We Need A Resolution" Featuring Timbaland [4:02] (Timbaland/S Garrett), has Arabic elements as the themes are about a couple who have issues but can't seem to resolve them. It's a back and forth of who's to blame and not really finding a solution. This has Timbaland sounding in his element, and definitely in synch with Aaliyah. This was produced by Timbaland, and written by Static from Playa. There's bounce, much drums, chirps of beats, and seductive edgy type exotic Middle-Eastern flavors creating much appeal.
"Loose Rap" Featuring Static From Playa [3:49](S Garrett/R Stewart/E Seats) is Aaliyah giving her vision of how when people talk smack behind your back then that's okay that's just loose rap. Another verse is about the player who made his move not quite strikingly yet that's okay because he's only giving his loose rap. An additional verse is about the jealousy in the industry of how many people competing talk bad out of envy but that's all fine because it's just loose rap. Once again, Aaliyah gives messages that are positive, life-lessons, and empowering for those who get easily upset over gossip, or any unsettling situation or hang-up.
"Rock The Boat" [4:33] (S Garrett, Stewart/E Seats) was the last song video produced by Aaliyah before the tragic passing yet lighting of her spirit. This song reflects all the hard work she put into her music career as she explicitly mentioned how she wanted this video and song to reflect a more edgy, more mature sound with sensual themes along tropical blends. It's a laid back groove, Caribbean at times, and even comparable to a back massage [music style]. The melody is mid-tempo with many references to "stroke it for me", "work the middle", "change positions"... stroke it baby... hmmm.. work it baby work it baby..." The vocal pitch is definitely rich, soothing in sound, and blends nicely with the music almost both coming in synch to create a masterpiece of a R&B sensation!
"More Than A Woman" [3:48] (Timbaland Mosley/S Garrett) is a faster paced up-tempo R&B track of being more than just a lover. Some words are, "Midnight Grindin'/My heart rate's climbing/You go, I go/Cause we share pillows/Taste me, feed me/There's still no separating/Morning massages/With new bones in your closet. I Don't Think You're Ready/I don't think you're ready for this thing/for this thing/... Constant pleasure/no scale can measure/secret treasures/keeps on getting better/Do you wanna roll with me?...." This showcases a seductive yet classy lover who embraces the romance and wants to give her man the best his heart desires.
"Never No More" [3:57] (S Garrett/S. Anderson) is one of my favorites for the attitude vocally displayed. It's about a girl who gave her lover "all" with no questions asked. The dramatic emotional impact is indescribable. The man she thought she knew turned out to be a snake as she sings, "Never no more!!!" It's about the typical insecurities many face regarding love gone wrong because the trust was tarnished. The inflections of tone in her voice elevate and elevate displaying a "true" vibe that she perhaps may have gone through something like that. This is about never no more/not taking the batter/not taking the lies, or the lack of care from the other.
"I Care 4 U" [4:33] (Missy Elliott/Timbaland Mosley] is another top selection that I enjoy for the fact the words are so tender, Aaliyah's voice is so in synch with the words and the song-writing is so excellent. It's about a girl who wipes the tears away from a friend who has suffered from a love gone wrong or from a negative situation. This is about the strong woman who will wipe away the tears of a man who may be muscular or tough on the outside but soft in his heart. She is his fortress, his angel. This portrays Aaliyah's personality in a way as she always cared for her close ones and lovers. She embraces this song vocally in flying colors displaying much love for the lyrics, themes, and styles.
"Extra Smooth" [3:54] (S Garrett/R Stewart/E Seats) is about a guy who comes on "too good" to be true. His words, his charm, his abilities to please are extra cool, extra cute, and almost fabricated kind of ...
"Read Between The Lines" [4:19] (S Anderson/S Garrett) has references to a guy acting kind of strange making the love to be kind of being off key because of the odd behavior. The rhythm and drums has a nice mid to up tempo style definitely sticky, infectious, and catchy. "In his eyes" it shows that there's something up.
"U Got Nerve" [3:42] (R Stewart/E Seat/B Bush) questions the actions of the lover who is gone out of line. Words such as, "Who do you think you are now? I can't believe you've got the nerve boy/Who do you think you are now? ... See I'm tired of all the games/That you seem to like to play/See what you can do for me/Is forget you knew my name..." This has Aaliyah with confident strides along attitude styles never harsh or loud on the listening but soft and strong.
"Refuse" [5:57] (S Garrett/J Walker) is another of those tracks that touches so deeply. The words reach me, the singing is intense, the piano goes with each thought, each emotion, and each expression. The singing is like a journey of love that is lost, gone, and never to come back. It's about a lover who disappeared, left, and the absence is there. She sings, "I refuse to let a tear from my eye/ I refuse/... It was your way/Or it was no way/And I couldn't live that way/... I refuse x 4+". The sadness is apparent in her tone, the struggle to overcome becomes apparent in the piano and instruments and the NO WAY I won't take it is stressed in the end with music, singing and impact! This is about standing strong against the odds of love gone bad!!! If you've been hurt listen to this and it will ease your worries, sooth the pain, and help keep strong.
"It's Whatever" [4:08] (S Garrett/R Stewart/E Seats) is about destiny calling to unite two who embrace their love, share their struggles, and are there for one another. The music references to "my body calling" to get together. The love is whatever "you want it to be..." This has chirps, heavy sounds, and great catchy beats that are mid-tempo very filled with rhythms.
"I Can Be" [2:59] (D Babbs/s Anderson) has a piano introduction with soft ballad style singing by Aaliyah as the beats pick up and go to mid-tempos. This is about the other woman who perhaps stepped into a guys life not knowing that he was taken. Unfortunately, these type of things happen and this song is about the "what if" I were with you and the "I can be" this and that while at the same time showing how sad the emotions are. Obviously, Aaliyah wanted the listener to know that it's a tough situation to be in and not a happy thing however the reality is that these are situations that arise.
"Those Were The Days" [3:24] (S Garrett/Stewart/E Seats) has references to the good old days when things were different. Yet it also states, "You don't know me no more/You can't lie no more/Ain't Gon' Try No More..."
"What If" [4:20] (D Babbs/J Walker) has a rock type blend with R&B mentioning the typical jealousies men have when their woman is being talked to by another. The vocals have a much rougher sound yet rich, deep, and very professionally sung. It's fast up-tempo with old school type styles.
"Try Again" [4:44] (Timbaland/S Garrett) has the "Tim" touch of heavy drums, excellent chirps, Timbaland's interjections, and catchy hooks. Both Aaliyah and Timbaland's chemistry becomes apparently strong in this track. This has the vibe of never giving up but in picking yourself up after a failed attempt. After Aaliyah's Star Search loss this may have been an inspiration to write this. This is from a movie where she starred as well titled, Romeo Must Die. The singing, song-writing, and life-lessons are definitely beautiful. So if your first date was bad? What about the second? This is about never giving up and just trying until you get it. "Dust if off and try again." This has catchy hooks, infectious grooves, diverse sounds, and much pizzazz.
Bonus Tracks:
"Miss You" [4:05] (T Bishop/J Austin) has Aaliyah's "signature singing style" of soft on the ears, seductive yet sweet, and soothing. The way the music plays along her singing is like a feeling of releasing all tension and stress. A distinct sound filled with luscious vocal pitch to focus on portraying the emotions neither loud, nor harsh, but rather a vibe of letting the music take the rhythms strong as her singing is heard softly in the background --very pure, rich, and deep.
"Don't Know What To Tell Ya" [5:02] (Timbaland/S Garrett) is a more edgy song with talk about intimacy, closeness and getting clues about what's needed to reach higher romance.." It's going to take L.O.V.E. to take it to the next level. "You want to handcuff me? Boy I don't know what to tell you... For u I don't know what to tell u.. to compare me to your last one.. I can't help she was a fast one, I'm a classy one..It's gonna take TRUST to get our LOVE cracking..."
"Erica Kane" [4:37] (R Stewart/E Beats, S Garrett) has a very rhythmic bounce along Aaliyah's soft sound bringing rich tones to the singing not breathy or too soft. The production is definitely great with themes, background instrumentation, and R&B blends. Erica Kane is the woman who can train the rich man to be broke. Why? She's Erica Kane!
Aaliyah dedicated this album to the memory of Mintis L Hicks Hankerson, her grandmother, mentioned in the booklet with a short passage definitely touching! She loved her grandmother dearly and made many songs for her as well as describe the difference she made in her life.
Aaliyah thanks first and foremost God for His love and blessings. Also, mentioning producers, staff, writers, and everyone who worked with her as well as family, friends, etc. Rashad, her brother is also very much mentioned as a genius and her baba [that's her brother who she had a very close tight relationship]. While the world of R&B may try to be like her or use other marketing schemes, not one has put faith, spirituality and values first like Aaliyah. For her it was not about money, sales, or arrogant attitudes. She was down-to-earth, humble, and most of all an all loving kind individual who was living her dream --a dream she fulfilled to the fullest in a very short time that would take others a life-long to accomplish. This album is the best to perfection out there. For the lyrics, there is a Japan Import but the bonus tracks are not on it. Enjoy!
great cd!!

Solid but I'm not sure that the three OK tracks are worth the price. Only if...
2007-11-26 - ...this is your FIRST Aaliyah CD would I recommend buying because then you're in for an R&B with pop elemental treat. It's very eclectic in spots but lovely throughout.

A decent edition
2007-09-06 - I was a little annoyed by the Germany release of Aaliyah's third album. This is also included in "Special Fan Box" (That is where I got this from). I felt replacing the hidden track "Messed Up" with "Try Again" was wrong. I felt doing that was removing an essential track from the album and replacing it with one that is not meant for the album. Also, the back cover art states that they cd is copy-protected. That is false. I had no trouble putting this on my IPod. I find that false advertising. That was just a tactic to scare people out of pirating the album. I do not agree with copy-protection but I also do not agree with false advertising. Now, since this album no longer has a US print, then if you still want to get a copy of this album, the go with this edition. It is a better edition than the one by Snapper Classics UK (ASIN : B000F6ZFPO). That one is a digi-pack that falls apart easily.
