Aaliyah (Limited Edition Including Bonus DVD) Reviews:
Exceptionally Flawless!
2009-09-28 - There are numerous versions to choose from in terms of the video portion of this set. While this one has the main videos "One In A Million", "Are You That Somebody", "Try Again", and "We Need A Resolution" plus Aaliyah behind the scenes it does not include other videos found in I Care 4 U (with Bonus DVD) as well as 2 other releases that include the video "Miss You". Also to note, this does not have some extras found on other current releases. On the plus side you have Aaliyah's signature songs that she wanted her fans to have, her favorite songs mentioned by her like "I Care 4 U" produced by Missy Elliott, "Loose Rap", and "We Need A Resolution".
We Need A Resolution is the opening track and has a middle eastern Arabic flair with excellent productions by Timbaland sung remarkable by Aaliyah. It's about couples, or relationships that are arguing back and forth but don't necessarily end up with a resolution.
Loose Rap is another nice track with 3 verses. As Aaliyah has stated, the first verse is about how sometimes people talk smack behind your back out of jealousy or what have you but the reality is that's just loose rap. The second verse is about a guy who is trying to hit on a girl but his game is kind of weak but that's okay that's just loose rap and the third verse is about the music industry and how their creativity sometimes causes others to be a bit jealous--that's okay that's just loose rap. Again, Aaliyah delivers stunning vocals, a beautiful message positive and special. Never let anyone bring you down!
I Care 4 U is an empowering song for a woman to feel the strength to help her friend or lover wipe away the tears and comfort him. It's one of those songs that Aaliyah had in mind for the strong woman to feel control and like a flip of things make the guy shed a tear and help him out. Missy Elliott did a great job in the writing.
Favorite tracks I enjoyed would be "Never No More" for the fact Aaliyah has a strong vocal intonation displaying much emotion and reinforcing the message that her no good lover can't touch her no more. It's over and it's time to move on. Another favorite, "Read Between The Lines" since sometimes a lover can act so bizarre it makes you wonder what's up [another lover]. The changed style is a dead give away and the song reflects on that. "I Refuse" is another empowering track that shows that you shouldn't compromise yourself or your worth for anybody. Be strong, and stand up for yourself. Once again, Aaliyah delivers a flawless song with much vocal variety definitely rich and strong. "Extra Smooth" is the song for the players. When a guy/lover has such a fabulous style of lines and way of being you can stamp it "He's one smooth player". This song talks about that. Aaliyah also nails the singing here. And to name 1 more favorite I'd say "I Can Be" for the fact that sometimes a person can fall in love with someone taken. It's not really something some people do intentional but it does happen. It's a depiction of how the other woman will do anything for her man but at the same time it's a bit depressing and sad as she is not happy [as Aaliyah mentions behind the scenes].
Overall, this has all tracks that are smashing with no fillers, a beautiful cardboard slip case with diverse artwork, a bonus DVD with many of her most popular videos, and a Behind The Scenes of all the different songs described by Aaliyah in detail. This is highly recommended for fans and new listeners.
a lost beauty
2003-06-01 - This cd is her last while she was still alive. It is not as good as her second one in my opinion because I prefer timberlands beats more and he did more work on her one and a million album so none the less this is is good cd.
A Beautiful Person, An Amazing Artist
2003-05-20 - Aaliyah is probably one of the best artists that we were blessed with, in the last 30 years. Each song is amazing, and unique. Each lryic and beat is brand new. Although, I love every track, here are my favorites.
"We Need A Resolution" - The first single, and a wonderful one at that. I love the beat of this song. It has a different sounding kind of chorus. The music video is great too. My favorite song on the album.
"Loose Rap" Another great song, another great beat. Probably my 3rd favorite track on the album.
"Rock the Boat" Another single. Aaliyah died when flying back home from shooting the music video for this song, which gives the song a whole new meaning.
"I Care For U" Aaliyah's favorite track on this album, and my second favorite. Beautifully sung.
"I Refuse" One of the longer tracks, and one of the best.
I love each song, and could go on and on about each piece, but I won't.
This version of Aaliyah's self tittled album comes with a bonus dvd, featuring an intro. by Aaliyah, music videos for songs "One in a Million", "Are you that Somebody", "Try Again", and "We Need a Resolution". At the end it features a behind the scenes look at the album.
Aaliyah may have gone to a better place, but she lives on in her music!
A Great Album
2003-04-07 - I finally bought an Aaliyah album after watching her grow over the years. I was impressed with this music, and saddened that it was the last. I don't have to go into detail, since the songs are blowing up the radio. A great body of work, and the DVD is a welcome addition, but it should have included all videos IMHO, like Janet's.
"Our last Hope for Creativity in R&B Music"
2003-02-06 - This is the last and final complete work we will hear from Aaliyah and is her most consistent. After a 5 year hiatus from "One In a million" we only heard singles and soundtrack songs which questioned her ability to do a whole lp! Finally in 2001 she delivers one of the most advanced and futuristic works of her career with out the help of Timbaland. Timbaland can be heard on only 3 tracks on this cd, but the rest doesn't disapoint in the least. Actually you can't even tell that Timbaland is missing the other beats are so far fetched! This is a milestone in R&B and it is to bad that the tradition hasn't carried on in others work. AAliyah has always pushed for the future just as Madonna, Janet(until recent album) and Prince did!Packed with the eclecticness that "TLC Fanmail" delivered to the Haunting feel that "Janets Velvet Rope" gave comes AAliyah! This is a master work that will always be looked at a one of the most artistic cd's in history. Fused with European Dance and Trip Hop elements, you can tell that Aaliyah is definitley a diverse music listener. U can also hear the funk delivered a heavy Prince influence through out this mastery of art. I knew that Aaliyah had a good ear when Timbaland & Missy stated that she discovered them for her 1996 "One In a Million LP !" When know one else would give them a chance in the business ! Don't miss the opportunity to own this "Limited Edition" I have 2 copies. The DVD features interviews with Timbaland, Aaliyah, and Keybeats and Static which did a bulk of the production on this lp. Also it features videos such as "One in a Million, Are you that Somebody, We need a Resolution, and Try again. It is a nice package for the money, Aaliyah will be truley missed ! You only run across a leader every 2 decades or so! I believe AAliyah would have surpassed the R&B stature on to stardom and innovativeness! She was definitley capable of being the next big super Icon! Definitley look for songs such as "John Blaze", "Man Undercover", and "I am Music" for further innovations from the late artist.
