Editorial Review: As a result of unprecedented changes in international politics and massive internal transformations. which took place in the 1960s, Iran, by the end of the 1970s, began assuming a prominent place within the community of nations and playing al1 ever-increasing role in regional and international relations. As the present decade comes to an end, a group of leading Iranian and American scholars and experts takes a long look into the 80s and what that critical decade holds in store for Iran and its relationship with the United States.
This book is based on a symposium held in Washington, D.C. on 4-6 October 1977, under the joint auspices of the Institute for International Political and Economic Studies and the Stanford Research Institute. It contains 19 papers and an edited version of the discussions which followed their presentation. The issues of energy, economic development, defense, and foreign policy all come under analysis in this wide-ranging volume.
Iran's modernization program and its role in international affairs will be influenced by a wide range of developments as the global and regional levels and should be seen as a part of the changes now underway in the international system as a whole. |
