On a bit of a trip...
2009-10-12 - AC/DC is an old reliable, a sound that is pure and unchanged which should make them easy targets for music critics and other cynics but they and their success is unassailable. The brothers Young do one thing only and they do that one thing about as good as any songwriters/bandleaders have ever done - make straight up, no frills blue based rock. On 2000's `Stiff Upper Lip', Angus and Malcolm Young bring in a old cohort from the Australian recording days, older brother George, the production chores but if ever a band was self-produced, even with someone else credited with the job, it is AC/DC. In the 20 year of ` Back in Black's release, the band's longtime lineup complete with Brian Johnson, Phil Rudd and Cliff Williams make most blues based record in many a year, maybe ever. Lead title track sets the tone and while many of the later song titles, lyrics and tempos may seem redundant, that is really the charm of AC/DC. "Can't Stand Still" (rare solo from Malcolm!), " Can't Stop Rock N' Roll" and "(Can't) Hold Me Back" show once and for all that these guys ain't emulating Wordsworth, but that really has never been the point. "Satellite Blues" and "All Screwed Up" are some of the more tasty cuts on an album that may end up like junk food (instantly pleasurable, but almost as immediately forgettable) but fans will be pleased. Ironically for such a by the numbers recording act it would take another eight years to record a follow up to `Stiff Upper Lip' but then again AC/DC are one of the elite bands (Rolling Stones) which can take an epic length hiatus and return as if they have never left. Their best days may be behind them and Angus may be losing his hair (but never the shorts!) but AC/DC can still deliver the goods.

2009-05-24 - Keeping a "Stiff Upper Lip" has never been a problem with AC/DC. They stayed with their meat and potatoes rock even when it wasn't fashionable, refused to tinker with the formula when their sales backslid, and continued to crank out albums of varying quality year after year. The one thing they have never done, however, is cut a bad album. "Stiff Upper Lip" follows in the tracks of Ballbreaker and Blow Up Your Video; solid and predictable, not earth-shattering, yet listenable years after.

The title track, "House Of Jazz" and "Safe In New York City" are the best things here. You may get the feeling you've heard these all before, and you'd be right. But few bands can do this as predictably as AC/DC, and they make it sound so easy that you can forget how hot it really all is. After all, "Stiff Upper Lip" is Angus and Malcolm at the band's quarter century mark and it was almost 20 since Brian Johnson joined the band. That the albums maintain a consistent quality (even if they aren't masterpieces) is a testament to the band's skill.

2009-04-08 - This album just does it's job!!!! This album beats BALL BREAKER and most of their other albums from the 80's and some from the 70's in fact! This album is really, really bluesy. I love the opening song STIFF UPPER LIP, it's one of their better albums! This album feachures four tracks that made the charts, STIFF UPPER LIP, SAFE IN NEW YORK CITY, SATELLITE BLUES and MELTDOWN! This is right up there with BACK IN BLACK!!! My reasoning is the fact that this album is so solid and bluesy. I love blues! The lyics are more meaning full, compared to BALL BREAKER.
