Editorial Review:
A clash of cultures in the spirit of MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING, this modern musical retelling of Jane Austen's classic PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is a hilariously entertaining tale of one girl's unlikely search for love! Sparks immediately fly as a love/hate relationship ignites between a small-town beauty (international star Aishwarya Rai) and a wealthy American (Martin Henderson -- THE RING, TORQUE) who's visiting her modest Indian village. In a swirl of music, dance, and comic misunderstandings, these opposites continue to attract and repel each other in a riotous romance that spans three continents! Featuring Naveen Andrews (TV's LOST, THE ENGLISH PATIENT) and a memorable performance from top recording artist Ashanti -- love will eventually conquer all in this acclaimed treat from the director of BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM!
Description of Bride and Prejudice:
The exotic sounds, vibrant colors, and ecstatic dancing of Bollywood collide with the cunning storytelling of Jane Austen in Bride & Prejudice (from the writer/director of previous East/West hybrid Bend It Like Beckham). When smart, outspoken Lalita Bakshi (Indian beauty Aishwarya Rai) meets Will Darcy (Martin Henderson, The Ring), she finds this American businessman arrogant and conceited--but because his best friend is falling in love with her sister, Lalita agrees to travel around India with Darcy. On the trip, a childhood friend of Darcy's named Johnny (Daniel Gillies, Spider-Man 2) both tickles Lalita's fancy and confirms her worst suspicions about Darcy. But as events unfold, Lalita wonders if she hasn't misjudged Darcy--and Johnny. Austen fans will be find much to criticize; Bride & Prejudice transplants the basic plot of Pride & Prejudice to modern India, but not much of Austen's sly wit or her insights about character and society have survived the translation. Henderson, though handsome, lacks the intimidating charisma of previous Mr. Darcys (including Laurence Olivier and Colin Firth). Thank goodness for the delightful Rai, here making her first all-English-language movie. She commands the screen like a true star (unsurprisingly, she's hugely popular in India, and previously starred in a more homegrown Austen adaptation: I Have Found It, based on Sense & Sensibility). For Western audiences unfamiliar with the freewheeling exuberance of Indian movies--wild musical numbers can break out at almost any moment--Bride & Prejudice offers an engaging taste of this fantastic cinematic style. --Bret Fetzer
Bride and Prejudice Reviews:
Addicting
2009-10-08 - This was my first introduction to the existence of Bollywood. This is not Bollywood it is an American/British film but many of the actors are from the Mumbai industry. The music is infective and the idea behind the movie is good. However, the acting is not so great. Aishwarya Rai in particular she has never really struck me as good in roles where she has to be negative. Her anger at Darcy seems more childish than justified. Perhaps its because she is contrasted with the American/British group that it comes off that way in this movie. I like her in most Bollywood movies and she is stunning but still, something just doesn't flow. However, I did buy both a soundtrack and the DVD so obviously I got over it.
Bride and Prejudice: AWESOME!
2009-10-03 - I am a dance major at a presigious college and I love all things that have to do with Bollywood and Bride and Prejudice is no exception. It is absolutely wonderful; a fusion of old-world Bollywood themes and new, complimenting ones from Hollywood. It is sure to be a fast favorite of anyone who loves Bollywood, musicals, love stories or Jane Austen Films! I would reccommend this to anyone who asked about it! One of my very favorites!
Bride & Predjudice DVD Review
2009-06-21 - I bought the movie Bride and Prejudice because I enjoyed Pride and Prejudice and it sounded like the story line was the same and would be just as good. I wasn't disappointed. I don't believe I had ever seen a Bollywood movie before and I thoroughly loved it. After seeing it I showed it to my daughter, grandchildren and friends who also loved it. I bought 2 more, 1 for my daughter/granddaughters and 1 for a friend who wanted it. I believe the film was just right in the amount of time, not to short or long. My granddaughters range in age from 3 to 11 years old and they watched the whole movie without leaving it. We all continue to watch it over and over. It is a feel good movie with singing and dancing. I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good love story. I give it a 5 star rating.
Not Quite Colin Firth
2009-06-17 - This movie is an interesting modern adaptation on the story Pride & Prejudice. It is more updated than other versions, and blends Indian and Western cultures in a fun manner. If you are looking for a fun movie that keeps you involved, this one is for you. But if you are looking for one that sticks more to the story line of Pride & Prejudice the best one to watch is the BBC Miniseries with Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy. However, this movie is upbeat, more modern, and has some beautiful scenes in India filled with color. The dialogue is not as heart-wrenching or breath-stopping, but some is left to glances and movements between actors which can be just as captivating. Overall a fun movie to watch if you are not looking for something that sticks right to the story.

2009-06-11 - This movie is pure candy. Orange, red, yellow, purple, blue. Music, dance, comedy, light drama. If Pride and Prejudice is your favorite movie, this is your new second favorite.
