This unique, highly acclaimed entertainment, stars Marlo Thomas, and features such celebrated talents as Alan Alda, Harry Belafonte, Mel Brooks, Rita Coolidge, Billy De Wolfe, Roberta Flack, Rosey Grier, Michael Jackson, Kris Kristopherson, THe New Seekers, Tom Smothers, The Voices of East Harlem and Dionne Warwick. Free To Be...You And Me is a journey into the endless possibilities of life, rich with positive, life-enhancing messages about growth and change. In a series of live action and animation, positive messages of self-esteem are illustrated through songs, stories and laughter. It explores children's authentic experiences, their dreams and concerns, their fears and fantasies. Among the highlights are Marlo Thomas and Mel Brooks in Boy Meets Girl and football hero Rosey Grier, singing It's Alright to Cry. In addition, Michael Jackson and Roberta Flack perform When We Grow Up and Alan Alda narrates the tale of Atalanta. This enchanted fun-filled voyage of discovery for adults and children to enjoy together is a superb addition to any family's home video library.

Description of Free to Be You and Me:
Like Schoolhouse Rock, Marlo Thomas's 1970s children's TV show, Free to Be… You and Me met with immediate success and became a treasured piece of entertainment over the years. Based on her award-winning album of songs, skits, and comedy, Free to Be explores the infinite possibilities of childhood. Fans know most of the skits in the 45-minute show verbatim, and it's easy to see why right from the beginning with an infectious title track followed by a puppet sketch featuring Thomas and Mel Brooks as newborns. Top talent appears on both sides of the camera, including Alan Alda who directs and performs a cartoon about a boy who wants a doll. However, the presentation does show its age at times: a teenage Michael Jackson singing (with Roberta Flack) on how he's not going to change when he grows up. For all ages. --Doug Thomas

The best kids learning tool.... timeless 5 Star Review
2009-11-19 - I had this album when I was a kid and loved it. I still remember and hum the tunes 35 years later. I am now buying it for our grand kids. What a wondeeful way to build your child's self esteem and to show them that it is ok to just be you whoever that may be!
And the biggest bonus is the cast of characters and the fabulous actors who play them!!!

    so fun! 5 Star Review
2009-11-03 - This DVD holds up well, although it amazing how far we have come since it was first in TV! No one cares if a boy has a doll anymore (I hope!). My daughter loves this DVD, especially the Mel Brooks/Marlo Thomas baby part!

    Love it! 4 Star Review
2009-10-19 - It is just as I remembered it. My 3 and 4 year olds loved it! The messages are wonderful and the songs are engaging. It could stand a little digital remastering, though ~ it's pretty old-school video.

    Love It!! 5 Star Review
2009-10-15 - This is a very good video, it's not only entertaining it's educational. My 4 year old granddaughter wants me to play it all the time.

Timeless and nurutring 5 Star Review
2009-10-14 - When I was a youngster back in the 1970s I had "Free to Be..." in book and vinyl record form and was hooked on both. I memorized the stories, learned the songs, and felt so empowered by the gentle advice to be yourself, follow your dreams, and not let anyone tell you what you should think or how you should act.

That message applies today, as much as it did 35 years ago, and those who have yet to see this DVD or read the book or hear the CD are in for a treat.

Yes, the visuals are VERY 70s, but the retro look is part of the charm.

My kids watched the DVD and were transfixed. Twice a day for a week, they couldn't get enough of it. My son had a friend over for a playdate and as they went to watch this DVD, I heard my son say, "You've GOT to watch this, it is SO COOL!" I can think of no better recommendation.
