Description of The Rockford Files: Season Six:
Private eye Jim Rockford (James Garner) begins his final year--not counting eight TV movies--by trying to hang on to his beachfront property ("Paradise Cove"). That matter settled with the aid of legal eagle Mariette Hartley, with whom Garner made a series of Polaroid commercials, Rockford proceeds to tangle with socialite Lauren Bacall ("Lions, Tigers, Monkeys and Dogs"), rival P.I. Tom Selleck ("Nice Guys Finish Dead"), and hooker-turned-hairdresser Rita Moreno ("No Fault Affair"). All his closest companions are along for the semi-final ride: Angel (Stuart Margolin), Lt. Becker (Joe Santos), and his father, Joseph (Noah Beery Jr.), who continues to needle his son about settling down. "When I'm ready, Rocky--not when you are," Jim replies.
Of the season, standout episodes include "No Fault Affair" due to Moreno's Emmy-caliber work (and despite a bad makeup job) and "Just a Coupla Guys," which writer David Chase (The Sopranos) presents from the point of view of two small-time hoods. Throughout, Rockford enters the 1980s in the same business-casual style he left the '70s. The times were changing--note the references to disco and new wave in the Chase-penned "Only Rock 'n' Roll Will Never Die"--but Jim remained the same, which is as it should be, except the network landscape was also changing, and the meat and potatoes of The Rockford Files was giving way to flashier fare. Consequently, the sixth year tops out at 12 episodes. Though "Deadline in Parma" appears as the series finale, it's a fairly lackluster note on which to conclude six great years. Fortunately, the set as a whole serves as a welcome reminder why Rockford will always be one of America's favorite TV detectives--humble, chivalrous, and decidedly un-quirky--they just don't make 'em like that anymore. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
The Rockford Files: Season Six Reviews:
The best
2009-11-03 - Was ordered for my 93 year old father. We all always thought Rockford was great / one of a kind. I will be disappointed if they try to redo it, as the rumors say. James Garner is Rockford and the series shows that. Didn't work with Miami Vice, Starsky and Hutch, etc. You want Rockford, buy or rent the real thing!!
Jim Rockford forever...
2009-09-23 - I already purchase the other five series set and really enjoy viewing this old TV show series, brings back lots of great memories.
with volume 6 being the last to complete this set, it will be a joy to watch. The only sad part is no more to see.
Also if you're a great fan of the Actor James Garner, then the Rockford Files is a must to add to your DVD collections.
Final Season of The Rockford Files
2009-09-13 - This is the final season of the Rockford Files. Due to conflicts between the shows writers, producers and James Garner, as well as nagging injuries to Garner, the shows run was abruptly cut short. As a result, the final season ended halfway through, so there are only 12 episodes, and unfortunately there is no "series finale" episode. That being said, the show is still great fun to watch. And in those final episodes are a nice array of follow up visits from pivotal or recurring characters from past seasons--fellow detective Lance White (Tom Selleck), Rockford's prostitute friend Rita (Rita Moreno), and his knock-out former flame, the blind psychiatrist played by Kathryn Harrold. There are some big name guest stars, too, including Lauren Bacall in a two-part episode and also Mariette Hartley, the actress who developed a rapport with James Garner in a series of Polaroid commercials. In this season Rockford also travels to Hawaii with Rocky for a run in with the Feds, and to New Jersey for a run in with a Mafia boss. And you never know when or how Angel will show up. Perhaps they powers that be will now start releasing the Rockford Files TV movies which followed in the late eighties and early ninties.
Love that Jim Rockford
2009-08-17 - Always entertaining episodes, and the character of Jim Rockford is more humanly realistic. I enjoy rewatching this series. James Garner fans will love it.
A weak season
2009-08-13 - The writing for Season 6 slipped dramatically. The best of the episodes were mediocre; the rest were awful. Watching these almost made me wonder if Garner really left the show early because of the poor writing rather than physical ailments, as he claimed. Thankfully, this wasn't really the end. Several of the TV movies measured up quality-wise and they are about to be released (half of them, anyway) in early November.
