Goo Goo Dolls - Live in Alaska (Music in High Places Series) Reviews:
Don't miss this! Breathtaking!!!
2009-02-01 - I am writing this review two years after buying and viewing it, many many times. Honestly - I own about 200 music DVD's. I love music, and I have to say - this production is incredibly special to me and I'll probably have to buy another one soon as my copy is much worn. I don't claim to be the world's #1 Goo Goo Doll Fan but I absolutely love them - and this DVD is incredible. If it was any other band I might not say that - simply because the band seems so incredibly natural in this setting. U2, Sting, etc - they might not enjoy Alaska and its' wild natural beauty in the same way (you never know!). They are so incredibly gracious, real, and natural guys. Not to mention oodles of talent... I just saw John Reznik play at Sundance last week - incredible, and it is now ~5 years after this DVD was released. He didn't look 1 day older and his talent only continues to grow (while his voice is even better). The scenery in this show is breathtaking - they filmed during the heady days of summer in Alaska, AKA snow in most places but many times where no jacket is required (nor are shoes required)!
If you love travel, if you like music, or if you have a soul - you won't regret this!
hmm
2008-11-23 - Gotta wonder with a name like that?
Purchase for friend. They liked it. I watched it but as a non-fan it didn't really excite me all that much. I've seen better concerts from bands I am not fans of before.
Goo Goo Dolls - Live in Alaska
2008-09-17 - This is a fantastic DVD of the Goo Goo Dolls playing live in Alaska. The cool thing is that instead of doing the "unplugged thing" on MTV, they play acousticallly on glaciers and in other remote parts of Alaska. The scenery is beautiful, and it is fun to see the band interact with the people who live there. While the whole production feels very intimate and genuine, it was the performances themselves that blew me away. The music is so raw and pure. Just the guy's with a guitar, a bass, and a very small drumset. No additional vocals, keyboards, or percussion. While the instrumentation speaks for itself, it is the emotional force of John's raspy yet smooth vocals that really resonated with me. It would be great to have a CD available of this endeavor, as well.
Tour of Alaska
2007-08-12 - It's a great dvd if you're interested in a tour of Alaska and acoustic songs of the Goo Goo Dolls. Very nice pictures of Alaska, its people and countryside, but limited hard driving music. A lot of interviews, meeting of different group members and Alaskan residents. Just beware it's more of a tour guide and pictures than a concert of the Goo Goo Dolls.
Breathtaking!
2007-05-29 - Any fan (casual or die hard) will enjoy this collection of great songs coupled with amazing shots of Alaska. The Dolls seem to really be enjoying themselves, especially Robbie, and you can tell how well it translates into the music. My faves include: the iceberg, the high jump with the locals and Johnny jokingly complaining about the non-smoking bars. I also have the Alanis in the Navajo disc, but this is visually more exciting.
