Editorial Review:
From the second the majestic overture of Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1949 show starts, you know you're in for a treat: In this age of diminished Broadway pits, hearing the 45-piece Orchestra of St. Luke's firing on all cylinders is just thrilling. And that's only the beginning of the fun in this most traditional, most delightful musical, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in June 2005. As Nellie Forbush, Reba McEntire deploys a homespun Southern charm that works marvels against the urbane Emile de Becque, i.e., Brian Stokes Mitchell and his impossibly buttery baritone (check out his rendition of "Some Enchanted Evening"). Of course we shouldn't be surprised, since country star Reba had turned out to be musical-theater star Reba when she replaced Bernadette Peters in Annie Get Your Gun on Broadway. Here, she brightly delivers classics (yes, the show is packed with them) like "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair" and "A Wonderful Guy." And let's not forget Lillias White, chewing the scenery in spectacular fashion as Bloody Mary ("Bali Ha'i," "Happy Talk"--what was that about the show being packed with memorable tunes again?). When the classic American musical is done with such gusto, it's hard not to be won over. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

South Pacific in Concert from Carnegie Hall Reviews:
South Pacific in Concert from Carnegie Hall 5 Star Review
2009-10-08 - I purchased this CD primarily because I love Brian Stokes Mitchell's voice, his stage presence, both of which comes through on this CD. But the rest of the cast is wonderful, too. Reba McEntyre surprised me. And it truly amazed me that the message of South Pacific is as relevant today as it was when it first appeared on Broadway.

Feom the charming to the enchanted. 5 Star Review
2009-04-13 - This is quite an animated performance considering it was done in concert. Reba McEntire is a most charming Nellie. However Stokes Mitchell's rendition of "Some Enchanted Evening" is an enchanting fabulous and the best since Pinza!

A revelation 5 Star Review
2009-01-06 - I received a copy of the current Broadway cast CD of South Pacific, and I was disappointed. Kelli sounds like she is from Scarsdale and Paolo sounds like he is from the Met. I found the supporting cast weak on that CD too. So I searched for the CD of the PBS special, and this CD was a revelation. Reba sounds like she is from Little Rock and that grounds the CD.She sings beautifully in the country style, but, at the same time, she completely respects the Broadway tradition. She also brings a vulnerability to the role. Remember this is a character whose nickname is "Nucklehead." When she recoils from Emile's mixed race children, her confusion and despair are palpable. She has found her perfect match in Brian. He sings, he acts and he thrills on "This Nearly Was Mine." And who ever thought of casting Lillias as Bloody Mary? Wow! She takes a stereotypical character and makes her flesh and blood on the CD. She sings both her numbers as if she never heard another singer's version. Thank you Lillias. Lastly, the chorus is terrific. I am completely satisfied with this CD.

A Great Cast and Recording of a Great Show 4 Star Review
2009-01-01 - This took me by surprise. I saw this in the stores a few years ago and thought, how could a concert recording of South Pacific with Reba MacEntire be any good? But I previewed it on ITunes and was pleasently surprised. So surprised that I bought it.

The first thing I noticed immediately were the original, wonderful Broadway orchestrations by the great Robert Russell Bennett. That alone was enough to make me purchased this, being that I had only heard the orchestrations in mono from the 1949 Cast Album.

The cast is superb, with MacEntire being the major surprise of the album. Her country music singing style really does work for a girl who is "Corny as Kansas in August". Her twang adds a dimension to the character never seen before (which I think was realized in the only revival that opened last year). Brian Stokes Mitchell is perfect and Alec Baldwin is hysterical (even if he can't sing too well). Joseph Cable and Bloody Mary round out this cast album to make it one of the best. Though the dialogue can get a little tiring to listen to, it gives the whole album a sense of completeness.

The ONLY thing wrong with this album is the music direction. Paul G (I don't know how to spell his last name), who is a veteran of Broadway musical direction, RUSHES through practically every fast song. I have never heard these songs like There is Nothing Like A Dame, Bloody Mary, Wonderful Guy, and Happy Talk played so fast. I don't know if it was because of time restrictions, but the songs feel incredibly rushed.

However, this is a great addition to any Rodgers and Hammerstein collection. With classic after classic, this is a joy to listen to the whole way through.

Over the top South Pacific. 5 Star Review
2008-10-14 - This concert version of the broadway show is awesome in many respects. The pairing of Reba McEntire and Brian Stokes Mitchell at first seemed so "strange/different" It could not have been a better combination. They were "in" character throughout - not easy in a concert performance. The chorus numbers were outstanding and Alec Baldwin was, well, he was just a hoot!
Finally Brian Stokes Mitchell's rendition of "This Nearly Was Mine" is probably the best, most heartfelt that I have ever heard.
