Editorial Review:
Shot in London during the 2000 world tour, Brutally Live showcases Alice Cooper doing what he's been doing better than anyone else over the past 25 years: turning a rock concert into a campy theatrical extravaganza. That he's old enough to be almost anyone in the audience's (grand?)father is quite beside the point. For Alice remains one of the few who knows that rock & roll should be fun, even if that means severed heads, gushing blood, and murdered babies. Even the fabled guillotine, from his heyday a quarter-century ago, makes an appearance. Alice also takes a shot at Marilyn Manson, Ozzy Osbourne, and Kiss by calling them "my undisciplined children."
Alice and his band rip through 105 minutes of some of his best-known songs, including "I'm 18," "No More Mr. Nice Guy," "Only Women Bleed," and the immortal anthem "School's Out," along with newer tunes like "Brutal Planet" and "Gimme" (also seen as a bonus video). The concert will surely satisfy Cooper fans, if not win him new ones; the DVD itself is a winner, with bludgeoning DTS and Dolby 5.0 Surround Sound and the choice of alternate camera angles on six of the 25 songs. --Kevin Filipski
Alice Cooper - Brutally Live - DTS Reviews:
Brutally Live
2009-05-05 - Brutally Live was the best of all three Alice Cooper DVD's that I purchased. Rock on!!Alice Cooper - Brutally Live (DVD & CD)
One of the best concert films I've seen!
2009-04-20 - Alice Cooper: Brutally Live has been in my Amazon "Wish List" for a while now. This concert was filmed during a time when the Coop was somewhat reinventing himself - mostly musically - introducing a more industrial style.
Although some fans may have been wondering about the direction, this show proves that Alice's head was in the right place. The show itself is spot-on shock rock horror. Dead babies abound.
Quality-wise, this is one of the best concert films I've seen. The film is crisp, the sound is clear, and multi-angles make for a complete package.
As has been usual for Alice, the show features the best of "the latest album" with a litany of greatest hits. "Dead Babies" leads to "Ballad of Dwight Fry" which leads to - what else - the gulliotine - and then Alice-less renditions of "I Love the Dead" and "Black Widow."
As if a highly entertaining and well-shot show with great music wasn't enough, this set includes a CD of the concert. I wish the "Dwight Fry" section of the show was included (could have done without some of the songs we've heard millions of times on other live albums) but this is how concert DVDs should be done - with a CD of the show to take around with you!
It's a great package, very complete, and well-done. Perfect thing for fans and casual Cooperheads alike.
Makes you wish you were there...
2009-04-18 - This is a great DVD for any fan of Alice Cooper. There is a good selection of songs from earlier on through the time of the release of Brutal Planet. The video and sound quality are both good and I like the alternate angles. I was also happy to get the video to 'Gimme', which was rarely seen on TV.
My biggest disappointment is that all of the songs are not on the CD. Although everyone wants to hear the biggest hits, they have already been recorded so many times. I would have left one of them off and at least included 'Pick Up The Bones', a GREAT version of a GREAT song that deserved a spot on the CD. I am glad it included 'It's Hot Tonight' and 'Caught In A Dream'. Overall, it is a good CD with a lot of good songs.
I would recommend this to any fan, old or new. Alice is great and, as usual, he has an awesome band. This is a great show and a lot of fun.
AC Pulls it off in style only Alice can
2008-11-15 - Great DVD of a highly charged concert from 2000. The energy AC and his band show in this concert is tremendous. DVD is filmed as if you are attending the concert rather than the terrrible follow-up DVD of AC live at Montreux where the 4 second shots make your head spin. Sound is great, camera angles are great, band is great. It is a winner! One DVD I would definitely purchase for my collection.
must have for Cooper fans
2008-08-14 - Firstoff, this video was shot the way I personally think all concert videos should be. From the point of view of someone in the best seat in the house. I was at the dress rehearsal for this tour and I had a great seat and this show is exactly what I saw. If, like me you're a huge Alice Cooper fan but you didn't get to see him on this tour- buy this. You will not be sorry that you did. This is Cooper at his best. He does his greatest hits plus some of his newer material at the time, he does his magic tricks, they execute him, he comes back, it's all here. He had a top notch band that year and this was the first year his daughter, Calico was a part of the show- she dances and plays a coupla supporting characters (she's now choreographer for the show). A good time for all. The one bummer thing about this 2 disc set, 5 songs from the show are not on the cd. I think this is because 80 minutes is all you can put on a compact disc and the show runs at lest 90 minutes, so it couldn't be helped.
