Alex Rider - Operation Stormbreaker (Widescreen Edition) Reviews:
Bond with out the women or excessive violence. 5 Star Review
2007-05-07 - I originally bought book 2 in this series for my 12 year old. I read it first to verify appropriateness and got hooked myself. We couldn't find the first book in print and so bought the movie. We all loved it. I understand it does vary from the book. You get what you expect from one of these movies, fun, fast action, a bit of unbelievability. No it's not fine art but that not what we bought it for.

The books and movie do not shy away from death and destruction. The bad guys get what's coming to them but without any gory details. Those who are against any gun violence will want to stay away.

    ummm............excuse me? 4 Star Review
2007-05-06 - hey dillan: "what happened to the age old knowledge that blondes are stupid'?!?!?!? i am blonde, one of the top students in the school, and have a 4.0 GPA. That comment alone shows how ignorant you are but you then had to go and judge the heroine by how tan she is. You do realise that people DIE from over exposure to the sun, right? Also, how did this movie insult americans? the one american in the film, alex's housekeeper, was my favorite character! This movie is much less of a "disgrace" to America than people who refuse to open their minds like you. If there were any "Ugly American" jokes in there,a) i sure didn't catch on to them and b) if all the british only know people like you, then its no wonder there were american jokes! please think before typing discriminating thoughts again.

on to the movie -- i actually really enjoyed it. I have never read any of the books but even I could tell that the movie had been edited. Even so, it was very enjoyable and the guy who plays alex was HOT! They should definately make this a series.

A pleasant surprise 4 Star Review
2007-05-01 - My son is a big fan of the Alex Rider series and looked forward to the movie, but it never came near us and took forever to come out on DVD. We assumed it must be terrible, but it is very good. The action is great and although it is not exactly like the book, the changes are OK. So what's wrong with it?--Some of the characters are too cartoonish, but Alex is great and Bill Nighy's version of Alan Blunt is brilliant. I had not pictured Mrs. Jones as a stylish Condi Rice but it works. Unfortunately there are so many split second film edits that it makes your eyes hurt. The girl fight scene is dumb and pointless, although the flash of the Avengers on TV during the fight was fun -- should have been Mrs. Peel instead of Steed. I enjoyed this movie far more than the grim Casino Royale. Alex Rider fans should not stay away; this is worth seeing.

Their are better spys out their 3 Star Review
2007-01-11 - This movie is okay. I'd much rather watch a James Bond movie or a Mission Impossible, though. The acting is pretty good, though their are some pretty bad/chessy parts. I guess this movies worth a shot, if you like spy movies.
    PS the book is better.

"You've Been Trained All Your Life To Be A Spy, Alex." 4 Star Review
2007-01-07 - I'm a fan of the Alex Rider novels, so I approached the DVD with some trepidation. I love the books. Can't wait for the next one. But the movie release never even came close to my city, which is the capital of the state. That concerned me.

Alex Rider is a 14-year-old spy that was trained by his Uncle Ian to be strong and independent. Perhaps not a spy. We never know for sure. But through the six books that have been published so far, we've gotten to know Alex quite well. He's not your average kid, but neither is he happy-go-lucky about being a spy. The movie depicts him, more or less, as that, though, and that's one of the parts where book fans will object.

What you see on the screen is very much a more light-hearted version of Alex Rider, bordering on slapstick comedy at times. Think of the original book series by author/creator Anthony Horowitz as Sean Connery's James Bond as opposed to Roger Moore's take on that character. Book Alex is more subdued, more desperate, and less sure of himself. But the curiosity and determination is the same.

Overall, the movie is an enjoyable experience. The action scenes are well choreographed (I loved the opening escape by Ian Rider and the later junkyard fight with the rope by Alex) and play big. Adrenaline and rock music kick in and propel the viewer through the film.

Mickey Rouke played the villain, and his portrayal was a little over the top and annoying at times. The makeup was way too heavy as well, even by kid standards. The Alan Blunt character was too thin as well. Blunt comes off much better in the novels.

OPERATION: STORMBREAKER will hopefully be the first of the Alex Rider franchise, though. The DVD is a great rental for family night or as an addition to the family library for action flicks suitable for the younger audience that will also hold the attention of adults.

But do try to read one of the books or put one in the hands of your 10-14 year-olds. They'll be glad you did, and they're on Accelerated Reader lists everywhere.
