  • Editorial Review:
If you love concert DVDs that offer first-rate music, excellent sound and picture, a beautiful setting, and substantial bonus features, then Alison Krauss and Union Station Live is destined to become your new favorite. It's not just for bluegrass fans either, as proven by Krauss's crossover success on the smash soundtrack of O Brother, Where Art Thou? as well as her pop-oriented hits such as "Now That I've Found You." That song plus "The Lucky One," "When You Say Nothing at All," and others are the perfect showcase for Krauss's meltingly gorgeous voice, and admirers of the concert's two-CD set will also find out how funny she is in her between-songs banter. AKUS has never been all about Krauss, however, so there are also instrumental jams plus featured spots for other members, including Dan Tyminski on O Brother's rousing "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow."

The second DVD offers 50 minutes of interviews in which all five members plus drummer Larry Atamanuik discuss their influences, their instruments, and their favorite songs. There's also backstage and road footage, baby pictures, and more. Perhaps the only disappointment is that two songs from the CDs are not included in the concert: "Down to the River to Pray," which is heard over the end credits but not shown on stage--presumably because the CD version was not taken from this 2002 Louisville show--and "There Is a Reason." --David Horiuchi

Alison Krauss & Union Station Live (Jewel Case) Reviews:
The best bluegrass disc I own 5 Star Review
2009-10-19 - Discovered this group a few years ago, and because they impressed me so, I now have virtually all of their discs.

Alison Krause and Union Station Live 5 Star Review
2009-07-28 - Alison Krause and Union Station Live is a must have for any music cd/dvd collection. Talent is talent and everyone in this group is loaded with talent. Though many will purchase it for the fine version of a Man of Constant Sorrow featuring Dan Timinski for the movie Brother Where Art Thou they will soon find this song in 4th or 5th place behind other favorites on this collection. There is not a bad song on this cd/dvd. The group has a presence that can appreciated by everyone. The group is talented, funny, humble and respectful of the success they have acheived. Alison has the voice of an angel, its simply mesmerizing. The DVD is exceptional as the filming was done in a beautiful theater apparently by people who knew what they were doing.

Alison Kraus & Union Station DVD Live 5 Star Review
2009-05-30 - It was even better than the CD. The interviews were fun to watch, as was the live show. Almost as good as being at the concert.

Very well played and recorded. 5 Star Review
2009-05-03 - I just got into American bluegrass and I wanted to hear and see this ensemble, to learn from the masters, you know...
The *double* DVD package contains the concert, insights about life on the bus - some funny moments - photos, and interviews.
The concert is very well played, and that was expected, but it is also well recorded in high definition and digital surround; the director made a terrific job being balanced between individual shots and mid-wide-field framings, the atmosphere of the theatre is totally kept in the recording.
The photos and credits booklet is minimal, but plenty of footage can be found in the 2nd DVD.
This is definitely one of the best DVD concerts I ever purchased.

    Nouveau Bluegrass 5 Star Review
2009-03-22 - Outstanding style of bluegrass--I call it nouveau bluegrass. Alison's voice is so perfect in this production and her entire team is so very talented. They could each split and be successful doing their own thing but they make absolutely beautiful music together. Dan Tyminski will go down in bluegrass history with his piece "I am a Man of Constant Sorrow". Jerry Douglas, Ron Block, and Barry Bales are all talents in their own right. Can't get enough of this DVD where it is three times more impactful than just a CD.
