Editorial Review:
Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas) directs this erotically charged love story that explores the passion and betrayal of a one stand.
One Night Stand Reviews:
Ebony Fantasy
2009-07-06 - I liked the movie because it surprised me at the end. This movie is no great work of art or an effort that challenged the acting abilities of the participants. It is just something that people who like Wesley Snipes movies will like. (Unless of course you are a black female) Black females are not represented at all in the movie as I recall. The movie seems more like the fantasy life a black man might have of career and sexual success that for some black men is probably a reality.
Simply amazing and overwhelming, what more could be said!
2009-03-07 - If you are looking forward to your typical romantic movies consisting of candle light dinners and dances, don't look forward to this one. This is a film that throws light on day to day life, throws light on people themselves, throws light on many relationships we undergo, Wesley Snipes delivers a very satisfying performance, he does a good job indeed, Kinski and Ming na does very well too, its truely a film to look forward to. Oh yes and last but not the least the dear pal Charlie, how could we forget him, Robert Downey Jr does an excellent job! I was overwhelmed by his performence. One of the most unique films on human relations, excellent score and good acting makes the film worth a watch, definately a film to look forward to. My rating 4.8 / 5
One Night Stand
2007-03-28 - If for no other reason, see this film as proof of Wesley Snipes' compelling dramatic ability. He proves, as he did in his earlier Spike Lee films, that he is much more than just another action figure clone. The film explores some deep forbidden territory, and made many viewers uncomfortable and therefore (I think), unfair and not objective in their reviews. Just as 'Fatal Attraction' was too close to the bone for some, many rejected this film for the inability to deal with their own feelings around infidelity, homosexuality, death, racism, lust and love. This is not a film for the insecure who wish to feel safe in the familiar landscape of their own backyards. It is a courageous if decadent exploration of the human condition on many levels. A truly fine film that I found profoundly moving. Highly recommended!
The hollow morality of the behavior often seen in modern civilization
2007-03-21 - Most movies that score the highest in the public's minds, are
those that take people to other times and spaces, constituting
entertainment value, often with some humoresque quip that sticks
in the minds of theater patrons after they walk out. For
example, Clint Eastwood's "Make my Day" or Bobby DeNiro's "You
talkin' to me?" and so on, leave an impression.
There are others, that tell biographical tales about people's
lives, their ups and downs, highs and lows, of popular people
and how they met their demise.
In this story, ONE NIGHT STAND, Nastassja Kinski reprises her
role, as a East-European photogenic, sophisticated female with
expensive desires or tastes, but low-profile nonetheless. On the
other hand, Wesley Snipes is brought in, to show that he's not
out of his league to hang with a certain professional social
circle, in the advertising elite of New York, and stands his
ground very well, with his own character, and upbringing, his is
able to converge to others minds at work.
Unfortunately, this picture is hallow in its message, and lost
in its purpose and lessons. The path is more important than the
destination. Ironically, the conclusions that are drawn, will
stem from the way the story unfolds, in this case, that of the
protagonist played by Robert Downey Jr, who plays a very popular
person working in the advertising industry, meeting his demise
from the terminal illness of AIDS.
As a result, perhaps the audience will be split in their
reaction, of either being horrified with the script, or perhaps
sympathetic to the plight of that hospitalized individual, or
even, vindicated in their religious beliefs and social
upbringing that judges as fundamentally flawed the frequent
(mis)behaviors that are shown in this picture.
For example, Snipes and Kinski, who are married to their own
wife and husband, actually get together, and split from their
partners and kids, as ex-marital affairs develop from the
insatisfaction in their sexual expectations. Snipes's wife buys
a video hoping to carve out a path to climaxes that are
purported in the mass media, as being in everyone's power to
attain. The fact that Downey Jr's character, on his dying bed,
admits to promiscuity in the 100's of partners, also perhaps may
serve as ammunition by some against the gay lifestyle or the
promiscuous sexual lifestyle. It is often said that mass media
vehicles condone sex to sell products and get the attention of
viewers.
There is no concrete lesson, that ONE NIGHT STAND wishes to
impart on the public. Yet, the lack of entertainment value of
this picture, coupled with the hollow morality of the behavior
of the protagonists in it, perhaps among the more enlightened
viewers, may secretly confirm the serious risks that they see as
being taken by reckless moral behavior, and reiterate the battle
that is seen in the souls of people residing in megacities, in
addition to everyone's own mortality. 1.5 stars.
Robert Downey Jr. is the reason to watch this film.
2007-02-08 - This is not a movie that I would purchase, but it is most definitely worth renting. Robert Downey Jr. steals this movie from the other actors. His performance, given from a hospital bed, is mesmerizing! Every other actor in this movie melts into the background when Downey is on screen. He has to be one of the greatest actors, albeit greatly troubled, that the silver screen has ever seen.
Ming Na Nguyen is nice to look at in her nude scenes, but you'll have to overlook the acting. Not good...but she has a very nice body and I loved the way her breasts looked in this movie.
Overall, the movie doesn't rate 2 stars, but Downey's performance rates at 5 stars. It's worth renting simply for that.
