Description of Mamma Mia! The Movie (Full Screen):
The delirious sight of Meryl Streep leading a river of multigenerational women singing "Dancing Queen" is one of the high points of Mamma Mia!, the musical built around the songs of the hugely popular pop group ABBA. The plot sets in motion when Sophie (Amanda Seyfried, Mean Girls), daughter of Donna (Streep), sends a letter to three men, inviting them to her wedding--because after reading her mother's diary, she suspects that one of them is her father. When all three arrive at the Greek island where Donna runs a hotel, Donna flips out and finds that passions she thought she'd laid aside are coming back to life. But let's face it, the plot is not the point--it's a ridiculous contrivance that provides an excuse for the characters to sing the massive hits of ABBA. Regrettably, first-time film director Phyllida Lloyd (who directed the original stage production) has drawn over-the-top performances from everyone involved, even Streep; every production number hammers its exuberance into your eyeballs. Which is too bad, because Mamma Mia! is a rarity: A middle-aged love story. The kids start things off, but the story is really about Streep and the three guys (former James Bond Pierce Brosnan, former Mr. Darcy Colin Firth, and Swedish star Stellan Skarsgard), as well as Donna's best friends (Christine Baranski, best known from the TV show Cybill, and Julie Walters, Calendar Girls). It's a romantic comedy aimed at the people who were around when all these songs were new, and that's an age group Hollywood largely ignores. For that alone, Mamma Mia! deserves to find an audience. --Bret Fetzer

Mamma Mia! The Movie (Full Screen) Reviews:
Mama Mia and Meryl Streep ROCK!!! 5 Star Review
2009-12-13 - I always loved meryl streep. She sang in a few movies. ( Death Becomes Her) She is AWESOME. I love abba and thought this movies was AWESOME. I am watching it for the 20th time as we speak. I still laugh and cry. If someone thinks it was filmed poorly. Than u do a better job. I can't imagine ALL the singers and dancers being that easy. And although i am not a fan of Pierce... Bon Jovi he is not but he did a heck of a job with what he had. I give him credit for going beyond his realm and taking in a whole new venue, knowing what people might say. U Go Pierce!! you only live once. Actually I find his voice better and better each time i watch it. Especially wheb he sings.... "When all is said and Done" And Amanda is a star on the rise. YOU WON'T REGRET THIS PURCHASE UNLESS YOU DON'T BUY IT.

Thank you for the music! 5 Star Review
2009-12-12 - I'm not going to nit-pick like a critic and just express my own opinion of this movie - I loved it! I grew up on ABBA's music as my parents were fans and remember singing and dancing to "Dancing Queen" when I was seven (such memories!). I have loved ABBA ever since, and it was only recently that I actually got to watch the movie (sadly, on DVD, as I missed it during its theater run). Though the actors do not remotely resemble (nor sing like) the singers of ABBA, they more than make up for it with genuine chemistry and camaraderie. A viewer can tell these actors had great fun during the production of this musical/movie and their fun is incredibly infectious! I sang out loud and even danced to the old, familiar, classic songs, and had so much fun! The main cast is made up of famous actors - the incomparable Meryl Streep (who really showcases her beautiful singing voice here), the svelte Christine Baranski, and Julie Walters (I remember her most from her role as Mrs Weasley in the Harry Potter movie franchise), Pierce Brosnan (yes, he does not exactly have a great singing voice, but who cares???), Colin Firth (whose performance as Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice left an indelible impression on me), Stellan Skarsgaard, and the two young and talented actors, Amanda Seyfried as Sophie, and Dominic Cooper as her fiance, Sky (the pair are a real-life couple and reportedly began dating on the set of the movie).

The story begins with 20-year-old Sophie Sheridan who discovers that any one of three men (Brosnan, Firth, or Skarsgaard) could be her father. Wishing to have her father (Sophie was raised by her mother,Donna played by Meryl Streep) walk her down the aisle at her wedding to Sky (Dominic Cooper), Sophie invites all three men to her wedding. The clueless Donna invites her two former backup singers to the wedding (Baranski and Walters), and when she sees the three men from her past, all hell breaks loose, and so does the music! The plot is quite thin, and the characters are not explored in-depth here - but the focal point of the movie is the music. The plot revolves around the music, and the lively dance numbers showcase great choreography. The fashion is reminiscent of ABBA's heyday and the costumes are in a riot of colors - all in all, pure rip-roaring fun!

This is a fun movie that brings back nostalgic memories. I will be adding this to my DVD collection.Someday, I hope to watch the Broadway musical.

Thank you for the great product and service.

    Fabulous! 5 Star Review
2009-12-09 - My husband and I had seen the play recently and I wanted to see the movie so badly. I was thrilled with the movie - the gorgeous scenery alone was worth purchasing this movie. We purchase a lot from Amazon and will continue to do so.

entertaining sentimental musical fluff high-energy for anyone nostalgic 4 Star Review
2009-12-03 - Some will probably condemn this movie, but I enjoyed it. It is silly and fun, a guilty pleasure. Lots of singing and dancing, and new interpretations of ABBA songs. Dozens of music and dance scenes were packed into one movie. I was amazed any time was left for a plot, but yes, there was a plot, and it was not entirely predictable. Colorful sets and costumes. High-energy music/dance scenes, some of which involved a surprisingly large crowd of performers.
