Editorial Review:
Buffy fans will go wild!
SHE WAS TARA ON BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER.
Now she’s the author of Ace’s hottest new series— killer novels featuring Calliope Reaper-Jones, who doesn’t want to be daddy’s little girl anymore...
Calliope Reaper-Jones so just wanted a normal life: buying designer shoes on sale, dating guys from Craig’s List, web-surfing for organic dim-sum for her boss...
But when her father—who happens to be Death himself—is kidnapped, and the Devil’s Protege embarks on a hostile takeover of the family business, Death, Inc., Callie returns home to assume the CEO mantle— only to discover she must complete three nearly impossible tasks in the realm of the afterlife first.
Death's Daughter Reviews:
Incarnations of Immoratility anyone?
2009-10-02 - While an enjoyable read, the main character is way too whiny. And the idea of "Death" as a job and a person, is something Piers Anthony did back in the early 80's with his "Incarnations of Immortality" books. I felt this idea read like a wanna-be of Piers Anthony personally.
Great read; twist on whodunit/private eye genre
2009-08-27 - Death's Daughter is a thoroughly enjoyable read. It has a great story, engaging characters and a good plot that seems to require the reader to pay attention to his or her knitting. One thing I enjoy in a novel is when a plot is complicated, but logical. The story in Death's Daughter has that sort of a plot. I can see Amber Benson writing a private eye mystery in the mold of Raymond Chandler and pulling it off, something I could never do in my poor attempts at writing a mystery novel. Anyway, back to Death's Daughter. The idea of a daughter searching for her missing father makes me recall fondly one of my favorite books growing up, "A Wrinkle in Time" by Madeline L'Engle. One other aspect I enjoyed was the mythology interwoven within the story. I loved the Hindu/Indian mythology and reading this book made me want to learn more. I look forward to the sequels to follow.
I like this book.Buy it.
2009-08-22 - So this is Amber Benson's first solo novel? Doesn't read like it. She seems very comfortable with the world, various realms and characters she's created here and it's obvious she's put a lot of care into them. Distinct and well thought out characters who talk, act and react to the hellish situations they're subjected to in sometimes real, most times humorous and most importantly...always interesting ways. The story kicks off quick and moves fast, yet never sacrifices characterization or story development. I do not recall any time where the story bogged down or slowed to the point of boredom. There's always something going on even it's just witty banter between the characters. It's a light, enjoyable read with none of the darkness and angst that has become typical nowadays. The story started with the revelation of the forgetting charm and I was hooked. It gave a good first insight into the mind of Calliope Reaper-Jones and how she feels trapped by her place in life(or death in her case). There have been times when I wish I could forget about and not have to deal with some situations. Ok...I'm not death's son or anything, but you get my point. We've all been there. I mainly enjoy writing reviews about movies I can make fun of. It's easier. But I liked this book,so...there ya go.
Also go to youtube and watch Amber's macarena video constant explosion re-mix. Very cool.
got lost in Calliope's world
2009-08-16 - i can tell you that the moment i started reading it that i didn't want to put it down...although i had to stop reading it while i did my university courses but every time i picked it back up i got swept up into Calliope's world as though i was really there...i think Amber Benson has a style of writing that brings the reader into the main character in which you can relate to the hero or heroine...it is what i like in books that i read...she also brings out her comical personality out in her writing but she still keeps with the story which in this case was Calliope's need to save her father and Death Inc...i'm looking forward to the sequel to this book which i already pre-ordered...i loved this book...great work to the author Amber Benson :)
Death's Daughter, not quite up to par
2009-08-05 - As soon as this book became available, I made sure to pick it up from the library. Since I'm a big Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan, of course Amber Benson was a big draw and I was curious about her writing ability. Not to mention this is the type of book I like to read regardless of who wrote it.
Ms. Benson is a capable writer, but she tends to over describe when it's really not necessary. The story matter and the whole world she created was very interesting, but throughout the book, I felt there was something missing. The main character, Callie, is okay - I didn't hate her, but I didn't love her either. I guess I'm just tiring of the same old twenty- and thirty-somethings in chick-lit-esque books that seem to pop up ad nauseum these days. I just don't understand or relate to "women" who are very ditzy, but still manage to save the day and/or end up with the guy, complain all the time, and lust after every cute guy that comes within a 50-foot radius of them. Not to mention, why are these protagonists always surrounded by pretty, perfect people that make them look even more inferior? That's not totally relatable. Maybe I'm getting older or more mature, or maybe it was just how I felt when I read it. Who knows for sure? Of all the characters, Kali was my favorite, she was pretty cool and brought some spice to the story.
Overall, the book was a fairly easy read and I do think I'll check out the second in the series to see how it progresses (and hope it shakes some of the first entry's jitters off and is more solid). I would recommend that if you're interested in reading this to get it at the library first, or else find it used.
Minor quibble: I don't know who picked the cover, but it's not how I picture Callie at all and it's rather sucky. Hopefully, the second book will improve not just in content. ;P
