Editorial Review:
Danny DeVito directs Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore in this devilish black comedy reminiscent of DeVito's THROW MOMMA FROM THE TRAIN and THE WAR OF THE ROSES. Alex Rose (Stiller) and Nancy Kendricks (Barrymore) are a young, professional, New York couple in search of their dream home. When they finally find the perfect Brooklyn brownstone they are giddy with anticipation. The duplex is a dream come true, complete with multiple fireplaces, except for one thing: Mrs. Connelly (Eileen Essel), the cranky old lady who lives on the rent-controlled top floor. Assuming she is elderly and ill, they take the apartment but their hopes are quickly dashed when they realize that Mrs. Connelly is an energetic senior who enjoys watching her television at top volume day in and day out and rehearsing in a brass band. A writer, Alex, is attempting to finish his novel against a looming deadline. However, each day as he begins to write, he is interrupted by Mrs. Connelly's numerous demands and requests and what begins as a nuisance quickly escalates into an all-out war. When Nancy loses her job and the pair are trapped at home together with Mrs. Connelly, their rage turns to homicidal fantasy as they plot ways to get rid of their no-good neighbor. Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore are pitch perfect as a good-natured couple who, like most DeVito characters, are driven by rage to do very bad things.
Description of Duplex:
Anyone who's lived in an apartment will understand the mounting frustration of Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore as they grapple with the upstairs neighbor of their worst nightmares in Duplex, directed by Danny DeVito. Stiller and Barrymore play a young couple who think they've found the home of their dreams when they buy an astonishingly spacious Brooklyn duplex. Unfortunately, the second floor comes with a tenant, a seemingly sweet little old lady (Eileen Essell). Her petty demands and manipulative ways drive Stiller and Barrymore to desperate attempts to oust her--and when she breezily resists their worst efforts, the hapless pair begin to consider more serious (and final) measures. Duplex might be called a comedy of anxiety; it constantly pricks at your expectations of disaster, sending you into a nervous state that demands laughter as a release. Also featuring Wallace Shawn, Harvey Fierstein, and Swoosie Kurtz. --Bret Fetzer
Duplex Reviews:
Good Movie!
2009-03-13 - This movie was very entertaining! It kept me watching to see what was going to happen next! Also, I love Drew Barrymore, so that made it worth my while as well. Drew Barrymore and Ben Stiller work well together! I would recommend this movie if you want a good laugh.
Not received item YET!!!!!!!
2009-02-03 - I have yet to receive this item. It has been well passed the time the item was suppose to be here............
Great comedy (could happen in real life)
2008-12-15 - I watched this movie 4 years ago for Christmas, and I plan to watch it again because I liked it so much (I am not sure why so many people disliked the movie; was it because they couldn't understand the plot?). Anyway the movie is about a tenant who moves into a house and drives the couple (played by Ben Stiller who is a writer and Drew Barrymore who is a magazine editor) absolutely CRAZY and they try to come up with a plan to actually kill her. There are plenty of twists and turns in this movie that it will leave you breathless! I highly recommend that you watch it and if you have already see it go see it again. I believe it is THAT GOOD!

This Old Gal is Smart
2008-11-12 - A friend at work recommended that I get this movie after telling her about the crazy old bat that lives in the condo above me. I laughed so hard at some of the scenes, learned a few tricks to use myself, and gave the old lady in the movie an A+ because she is way smarter than the old battle-ax I have to contend with everyday. This movie is a "must see" for anyone who lives below some old goat in an apartment or condo. The old lady is the optitome of the classical "neighbor from hell." I think we all can relate to this to some degree, especially those of us who live way too close to others!
Duplex
2008-11-03 - This is another triumph for Drew Barrymore. A couple buys a house which already has an upstairs teneant of an old woman. The old lady gives them nothing but trouble, until they fantasize about killing her. it is very funny and enjoyable.
