Editorial Review:
2009 release from the multiple award-winning, platinum-selling R&B singer and songwriter. In Love & War is her fourth album overall and her first for Def Jam Records. The album features an all star team of producers and collaborators. 'Why R U' was produced by the Buchanans, who were among the roster of producers that worked with Amerie on her last two albums, Touch (2005) and Because I Love It (2007). In addition to the Buchanans, other producers who worked on the sessions include Teddy Riley, Sean Garrett & Eric Hudson, and Jim Johnson & Rico Love. Features the single 'Heard 'Em All'.
In Love & War Reviews:
The true Defenition of "UNORIGINALITY"
2009-11-10 - This album is so TYPICALLY R&B, There are no surprises in this batch of GENERIC songs. "In Love & War" sounds exactly like anything else she's released. Her album's have always been very CONSERVATIVE. This is truley a BORING album with no tricks or treats.
Amerie has been singing about the same boring subjects since she came out in 2002, Only difference is that her debut album was actually GOOD, And her singles have always been decent for the most part. Everything on this album has already been done by someone else including herself.
R&B music as of late has been drab, predictable, "same" and dull. "If you've heard one, You've definitely heard them all". Amerie, (Like Mya) are stuck in a box, They do the exact same things over and over and over. Every song from each album are interchangeable, You can't tell which album you're listening to because they all are close in sound and lyrics. Hitting the same tired notes again and again, The only thing that ever changes is the year and the artwork.
(Someone gave this CD to me)
Did not like this album..
2009-11-08 - I love all her previous albums. I am more into the slow songs, but have liked the upbeat songs on her previous albums, but can't find one song on this one I like.
Exceptional Contemporary R&B/Dance Album
2009-11-07 - Amerie has always been underrated compared to fellow contemporary R&B/dance diva Beyoncé, which is a shame as Amerie is quite talented vocally. "1 Thing" from her gold-certified Touch was her biggest career moment. Unfortunately, she's been out of the starlight in the U.S. for 4 years, and eternity in the music business. Despite this lengthy hiatus, Amerie hasn't missed a beat vocally or as far as the quality of her music. Here, Amerie has the same bite and vitality that she had on 2005's Grammy-nominated TOUCH. In fact, vocally I think she is stronger and more gritty than in 2005. While I'd be shocked if this album even went gold (given her underrated nature and the current music business), In Love & War is a fine album. There is no reason for Amerie to hold her head down on this one - she 'knocks it out of the park'.
The album opens when the hard drums of the bumpin' "Tell Me You Love Me" in which you forget the fact that Rich Harrison doesn't produce one iota of this album. The synthesized horns sound fantastic and Amerie is vocally perfect here with all the sensuous vocal affects and fine nuances. Nothing to quibble about on this Teddy Riley produced 'joint'. Eric Hudson produces the fine follow-up track, "Heard 'Em All" which finds Amerie keeping up a hot streak of sexed-up R&B music. As good as everything else, "Dangerous" is hip, fresh, and hearkens back to Amerie's "1 Things" via the hard, funky drums. While a small complaint to some might be that a number of the songs on 'In Love & War' sound strikingly similar in conceptions, I personally think the high energy songs work best with Amerie's voice. Every singer must play to their strengths, and Amerie does it here to a 'T'.
"Higher", produced by Mary Mary chief producer Warryn Campbell, keeps it 'poppin', while "Why R U" slows the beat down only slightly to let the song 'breathe'. An excellent duet between Trey Songz and Amerie captivates the listener on "Pretty Brown" while a slightly raunchier (but tasteful of course) collaboration between the ubiqutous Fabolous ("More Than Love") is equally enjoyable.
"Swag Back" may not be my favorite compared to the better "Tell Me You Love Me" or "Heard 'Em All", but it is definitely above average. Ignoring the interlude "You're A Star" (which features great production work mind you), "Red Eye", produced by Bryan Michael Cox lays well, even if it is less exciting than earlier tracks. "The Flowers", produced by Karma is lengthy, though very beautiful, particularly the progression used as its underpinning. "Different People" and "Dear John" are solid, though fail to captivate. The Remix of "Heard 'Em All" is an excellent closer track (features Lil' Wayne).
Overall, this album is great. Amerie is in her zone, the production is awesome, and the album is fun. 4 stars.
Next music single video down the drain
2009-11-07 - Im a HUGE fan of Amerie. I wasnt really feeling her first single "Why dont we fall in love" much at all. My mind changed drastically when I got to listen to her WHOLE first cd during a road trip, but the video "Talking to me" was the icing on the cake. I have been a die hard fan of hers ever since, and have all 4 cds.
The "More then love" track HAD next single and music video written all over it. I cant help but play that track on repeat about 4 times before moving to the next song. If the video treatent done right, it could crush videos on VH1 and BET music count down shows.
I can imagine the video treatment being similar to Brandys "They Dont know about Us" video with Kanya West...................BUTTT,
Kanya diva outburst at the award show and negative media buzz jeopardized that oppurtinity for that to happen.
Why is Amerie still considered a underdog? I do respect her drive to keep on going, most artists would have gave up or become a full time song writer in the music industry.
PS: Shefine as hell, and I have NEVER heard anything NEGATIVE about her PERIOD.
Amerie has incredible potential
2009-11-07 - The music on this album is far above what I was expecting. Her producer's really delivered. The lyrics well thats another story.
I really wanted to like this album. Really I did. I wish I had.
Her voice isn't the problem. I think it is about an octave too high but still sounds more than decent. Its not her looks because of the current crop of Diva's fighting for Beyonce's throne I think she looks the best.
My problems lie with the lyrics and the way she sorta "raps" them. I think she wrote most of them and while I can appreciate she is an artist and wants to be creative, I think she would benefit from the Whitney Houston school of singers. Let real songwriters write the songs and you stand there and sing them. Worked for her and I think it would work for Amerie.
She sounds like she is mad at her ex for the majority of the album. Mary J Blige sounds like that all the time and she sells millions of records. I don't have a problem with that but her lyrics and arrangement are so off kilter it doesn't make me feel sympathy or empathy.
On her song "The Flowers" she says she wishes he "would have given her the flowers, so she could smell them." The simplistic lyrics don't inspire. They just bore.
