Description of Dan in Real Life:
Steve Carell’s best film performance to date can be found in the fitfully engaging Dan In Real Life, where his long-suffering persona suits a character who lets his long-dormant hopes rise for a moment, only to be shot down again. Carell plays Dan Burns, a newspaper columnist who writes about family issues and relationships. As a widower with three growing girls to raise, however, the difference between Dan’s printed wisdom and his struggles with fatherhood and loneliness is often vast. He’s put to a severe test when he packs up the kids for a cabin holiday with his parents and siblings, then falls for the exotic, if elusive, Marie (Juliette Binoche) during a solo excursion to a bookstore. Stirred by a woman for the first time since his late wife, Dan is shocked to find that Marie is actually dating his brother Mitch (Dane Cook), and that she’ll be spending the vacation with him in the midst of his family. From that point, the script, co-written by director Peter Hedges (Pieces of April), pretty much becomes a parade of difficult circumstances under which both Dan and Marie have to keep their attraction to one another secret. Certain scenes work better than others, but there is an overall monotony to the movie that isn’t helped by a lack of onscreen chemistry between Binoche and Carell. Both actors are fine on their own terms, but whatever is supposed to be clicking between Marie and Dan isn’t compelling enough to make one truly care that they get together somehow. Still, this is a film with plenty of moments to like, especially when Carell gets to broaden his previous range of emotions in a movie. --Tom Keogh
Dan in Real Life Reviews:
A really good film you can watch with just about anybody...
2009-01-09 - What we liked about this movie (so much so that we purchased it!) was that it was an entertaining movie that we could watch with our older children. Only a few inuendos were included, and the "shower scene" wasn't obscene. We are pretty conservative, and although we prefer our children not watch unmarried people in the shower, it showed nothing more than Steve from the chest up.
While it maybe wasn't the most sophisticated movie we've watched, we felt secure enough that if we had mixed company over, we could pop the movie in for a few laughs, and not blush. Our older kids still laugh about the "Ruthie...Pig Face" song.
Dan In Real Life Review
2009-01-06 - I was really excited when I ordered this product because it was a Christmas gift for my best friend. When it arrived I was slightly less than thrilled. The product information had said it was in very good condition, but when it got here that didn't quite seem to be a proper description. The cardboard covering was ripped and warn so I had to just throw it away before I gave the gift away. I was a little bit worried when I gave it to my friend because really who wants to give a less than perfect gift away? In the end I am pretty sure that the DVD works just fine, which is all that really matters I guess, but I was rather disappointed. I can't blame the person who I bought the product from fully for sure for my disappointment because it very well could have been something that happened in the shipping process, but either way I wish that I would have known that it was not going to be in what I would consider very good condition.
Just as expected
2008-12-31 - This was a purchase for a Christmas present. The item was received in time for the holiday and was in the condition represented. I would most certainly purchase from this seller again.
A Delightful Time!
2008-12-28 - Looking for a movie that is funny, engaging, and clean and gets you thinking? If so, "Dan In Real Life" is it! Dan (Steve Carell) is an advice columnist who, despite the help he provides to his readers, is floundering as a single parent raising three daughters. When they head to a Rhode Island beachfront cottage for an extended family vacation, things really get tangled. Sent by his mother to get the newspaper, this widower meets Marie (Juliette Binoche) in the book section. They are immediately attracted to each other. Upon his return to the cottage, Dan finds that Marie is his brother's new girl friend. You can imagine, well no, you really can't, where this all leads. I better not give more details so as not to ruin it for you, but trust me, you will emphasize with the characters, share their moods and have an overall delightful time.
So bad it hurts.
2008-12-15 - Another title for this movie could be, 'A Fist Full Of Cliches'. Another reviewer said that Steve Carell was pretty good up until the shower scene - he wasn't. I'm putting the same amount of energy into this review as went into the script.
