Description of Mr. Woodcock [Blu-ray]:
Rhetorical question: What’s the only thing that can keep a potentially bad movie’s head above water? Good actors, or course. Sure, the Dodgeball-esque scenes of Billy Bob Thornton viciously pegging second-graders with a basketball are chuckle-inducing (It appeals to the America’s Funniest Home Videos lover in all of us), but the movie didn’t quite live up to the promising plot. John Farley (Seann William Scott) plays a bestselling self-help author who was once a portly underachiever often bullied and terrorized by his militant (and potentially lawsuit-causing) gym teacher, Mr. Woodcock (Thornton). When he’s invited to receive his Nebraska hometown’s most coveted award, the corn cob key, he decides to pay his mother (Susan Sarandon) a visit. With horror, he discovers that she’s planning on getting married to the sinister Mr. Woodcock. And, of course, the rest of the movie shows John’s unraveling as he tries with all his might (and "corny" predictability) to stop that from happening. The movie provides some good laughs, but it’s definitely on the B-list for the likes of these hilarious starring actors. --Jordan Thompson

Very Funny
2009-07-14 - I watched this with a couple of friends and we all thought it was a very good comedy. Not hilarious, but well worth watching, and one of the funnier movies I have seen. The actors are great and the story entertaining.
It deserves way higher ratings than the ones posted here.
Mr. Woodcock; UNDERRATED!
2009-07-07 - I'm with Tara Lynn. I can't believe so many people panned this movie. The performances are great and the story is as well-written as most any comedy these days except that it will actually make you laugh out loud. Why would anyone take a movie like this seriously? You're not supposed to! Didn't anyone ever tell you that with movies, you're supposed to suspend disbelief? The movie works perfectly if you watch it as it was intended to be seen.
Aside from the hilarious gym class scenes and the fast food restaurant scenes, there are other, really funny moments such as all the scenes with Amy Poehler. Her little quits and demands are hysterical! And the scene at the retirement home is very, very funny.
Should this movie have won an academy award; no, but I can think of a stack of mindless, useless, so-called comedies that didn't come close to making me laugh as much as Mr. Woodcock did. Don't look for a tidy, "appropriate," resolution to this story as it didn't really need one.
You could pick apart Mr. Woodcock for all the minor "inconsistencies" but you'd be missing the overall "experience" of it. I think it was well worth watching.
VERY FUNNY
2009-06-21 - Everytime "Mr.Woodcock" was on the cable stations I just passed on it.Yesterday at my Sisters house she had the movie on,and I watched the entire film and loved it.
Billy Bob Thorton is fantastic playing the horrible gym teacher.Ethan Suplee and Susan Sarandon are also great.
