Editorial Review:
Action anti-hero Jason Statham is competing with himself to make the most relentless, non-stop action flick imaginable. In Crank, Statham stars as a hit man named Chev Chelios who's been poisoned by some Chinese toxin; the only way to stave it off is to keep his adrenalin flowing, which requires him to drive at top speeds through crowded traffic, start fights in bars, and run pell-mell down hospital corridors while wearing one of those humiliating smocks that tie in the back. In other words, Crank is high-end pop-trash, filled with many preposterous/ingenious stunts and over-the-top performances (Dwight Yoakam, Sling Blade, is downright droll as a doctor offering Chev assistance), marred by an unpleasant attitude towards women (Amy Smart, Outside Providence, will not look back on this as one of her signature roles). This is a movie for the audience who enjoyed Transporter and Transporter 2 but wanted Statham's perpetual scowl to become a kind of theatrical mask, a perpetual signifier of intensity that begs--nay, demands--that everything around it rise to a mutual level of absurdity. Fans of Luc Besson (Leon/The Professional, District 13) will find Crank to be simpatico. --Bret Fetzer
Crank Reviews:
Rock n Rolla
2009-12-03 - "Crank" is directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor. Chelios (Jason Statham) is a hitman who has been injected with a drug that will stop his heart, and the only way to fight the drug is to maintain a high level of adrenaline. Chelios then goes on a rampage hunting down the gangsters who did this to him.
This film has a frenetic style of fast clips and an almost montage style of filmmaking that reminded me somewhat of Oliver Stone's film "Natural Born Killers". Everything about the film is geared towards a hyper-realism. This is a brilliant film that never slows down. Buckle up!
A surprising movie
2009-11-05 - This movie wont win any awards, but this is one of the coolest( and weirdest) films I've ever seen. it seems to be almost like a video game, but with real acting, action, drama, stunts, etc. Most of the time it never takes itself seriously and the film goes in and out of reality quite a bit. Its both smart and stupid( but in a good way)That being said, i think it is the most adrenaline charged film I've ever seen ( taking into consideration it only costs 12 million to make) it feel like it costs alot more.Great fun, funny dialogue and situations.
It also contains a spin on the film DOA and its remake.I wont go into anything more there. You would have have to see it for yourself
As far as the DVD goes, a decent amount of extras. The commentary track is one of a kind- it also contains a little picture-in-picture video in the bottom while u can watch the film around it and see how the film was made.I like this feature for the most part. The only problem with it is , while the content in the commentary is informative, feels more like a documentary on the film than a true commentary track where the commentators discuss things going on the screen at that very moment.Instead of putting this a separate entity on the DVD in the special features section, they made it as the commentary track that played in a small box while you watch the film.Either way, its well worth the price.I highly recommend this.
Faster, faster, more!
2009-10-22 - Jason Stratham is having a really bad day. Professional assassin Chev Chelios wakes up in his Los Angeles loft to find a DVD with an obscenity scrawled across it. The DVD reveals his main gang enemy has injected him with a poison that will kill slowly. The only way to stave this off is if he keeps his adrenaline pumping. Think the old classic suspense movie D.O.A. on steroids. Oh, and make sure that the humor is adolescently macho and try and ignore the thicky misogyny, and you'll probably get a kick out of "Crank."
There's a lot of really loud popcorn dumbness to be found here, with Stratham leading the charge. "Crank" is a sort of elevated grindhouse, with illogical feats in abundance. Making a cell phone call while falling from 40,ooo feet? Sure. banging your girlfriend in the middle of a Chinatown plaza with a busload of tourists looking on? Why not? Hitting a street after a terminal velocity freefall and not going splat like a rotten pumpkin? Couldn't do a sequel if that happened, could we? So zap the microwave popcorn and pop a brewski...and deny to your friends that you actually watched this. But it's still IQ mangling fun.
Over the top action, and a great disc to boot!
2009-10-19 - Viewed on a Panasonic 50" plasma via a Panasonic DMP-BD80 through a Yamaha RX-V869 receiver (5.1 speakers) and an HDMI splitter/amp.
Wow. Shot on an HD camera, this movie really shows off the production medium. Outstanding, demo-quality PQ/AQ - check the AVS blu-ray forum and others for further reviews. After the first few minutes where Chelios wakes up, the movie really takes off: 3D pop, awesome audio, the works.
OK, the movie may be rock stupid, but if you can check your brain at the door, this one is worth watching.
Crank
2009-09-29 - Extreme action flick that may be a little over the top for some people. I rented Crank 2 and found it was over the top for me and also unbelievable.
