Description of Elton John - One Night Only (The Greatest Hits Live at Madison Square Garden):
Elton John has had too many hits over the last three decades for the 12 songs in this collection to seriously be considered his "greatest," but that's hair-splitting. This hourlong concert, performed by John, his band, and several guest singers before a packed house at New York's Madison Square Garden in October 2000, certainly does contain some of his (and lyricist Bernie Taupin's) best and most popular tunes, like "Candle in the Wind," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," and "Your Song." And while Elton is a rather unlikely pop star these days--chubby, middle-aged, far less flamboyant than in his '70s heyday--he can still put on a good show, and that's just what he and his band (including longtime cohorts Davey Johnstone on guitar and Nigel Olsson on drums) do.
Some of his choices for guests are a bit puzzling: Bryan Adams adds little excitement to "Sad Songs (Say So Much)," while singer Ronan Keating of the British group Boyzone, a virtual unknown in the United States, is superfluous on "Your Song," perhaps Elton's most enduring tune (revived to considerably better effect on the Moulin Rouge soundtrack). On the other hand, Billy Joel is a good foil for Elton on "Yellow Brick Road," Mary J. Blige adds some soulful fervor to "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues," Kiki Dee shows up to duet with Elton on "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" for the first time in several eons, and the young American singer Anastacia is a revelation on a hard-rocking "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting." --Sam Graham
Elton John - One Night Only (The Greatest Hits Live at Madison Square Garden) Reviews:
Elton Johns Greatest Hits
2009-09-08 - If you like Elton John, you will love this concert DVD. The quality is great and he plays all of his hits and has a couple of great guests to perform on stage with him. You won't be disappointed with this DVD.
elton john one night only the greatest hits live MSG
2009-06-27 - this is one of the best concerts i have ever seen.I always enjoyed his music, but to see this concert on DVD was the next best thing to being there, just a great show ,Elton will keep you moving during the hole show ,what a great talent,he is really good. The audio on this was great on my sound system, the video was good but not the best, after all Madison square garden is not the best for video,it is a sports facility, but they did do a pretty good job,i seem to get allot of glare from the stage lights, now the close up shots were wright on,well worth the money for this concert.
Wow...
2009-05-13 - ...If you're an Elton fan, this is the dvd to buy! Fantastic quality and superior performances by Billy Joel, Mary J. Blige and Bryan Adams. A must have! Quick shipping; wrapped and brand new as promised.
A nice surprise
2009-04-21 - Being an old guy I knew very little or close to nothing about
Elton John. Then, I received by email a WMV file with an 1976
show of "Don't go breaking my heart", a duet of Elton John wearing
his clown suit and the lovely Kiki Dee. I bought through Amazon the
whole 2000 show at the Madison Square Garden, which lasts more than
two and a half hours. It is a kind of collection of the best of
previous recordings. If you have a Movie Theater or even a good 49
inches screen with an adequate sound system, you will watch a first
class show at a very small pricing. I recommend it strongly.
Not my favorite
2009-01-26 - This was not Eltons best effort, played once and gave it away. Quality of video not of highest quality.
