Editorial Review:
Bill Murray is at his wry, wisecracking best in this riotous romantic comedy about a weatherman caught in a personal time warp on the worst day of his life. Teamed with a relentlessly cheerful producer (Andie MacDowell) and a smart-aleck cameraman (Chris Elliott), TV weatherman Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is sent to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to cover the annual Groundhog Day festivities. But on his way out of town, Phil is caught in a giant blizzard, which he failed to predict, and finds himself stuck in small-town hell. Just when things couldn't get any worse, they do. Phil wakes the next morning to find it's Groundhog Day all over again... and again... and again.
Description of Groundhog Day (15th Anniversary Special Edition) [Blu-ray]:
Bill Murray does warmth in his most consistently effective post-Stripes comedy, a romantic fantasy about a wacky weatherman forced to relive one strange day over and over again, until he gets it right. Snowed in during a road-trip expedition to watch the famous groundhog encounter his shadow, Murray falls into a time warp that is never explained but pays off so richly that it doesn't need to be. The elaborate loop-the-loop plot structure cooked up by screenwriter Danny Rubin is crystal-clear every step of the way, but it's Murray's world-class reactive timing that makes the jokes explode, and we end up looking forward to each new variation. He squeezes all the available juice out of every scene. Without forcing the issue, he makes us understand why this fly-away personality responds so intensely to the radiant sanity of the TV producer played by Andie MacDowell. The blissfully clueless Chris Elliott (Cabin Boy) is Murray's nudnik cameraman. --David Chute
Groundhog Day (15th Anniversary Special Edition) [Blu-ray] Reviews:
Stuck in Carlisle, again.
2009-10-17 - An excellent turn by Bill Murray carries the film. Andie McDowell, while an attractive model, does not display strong acting chops here. She is runover by the Murray star vehicle. Decent supporting cast with Chris Elliot, Brian Doyle Murray, Steven Tobolsky and others round out the picture. With Murray's patented mugging and fish out of water character stuck in the same day, in the same place ad infitinum it could have been quite tedious to watch, but as he relived the same day over and over there was a growth in his character's humanity. Perhaps a kind of pergatory for his lack of humanity. Reminded me of being stuck in Carlisle, Pa. in the snow and having been told to stay just another day or two on an assignment. I find it an enjoyable screwball comedy.
If Bill Murray fan, a MUST SEE!
2009-10-16 - This movie is HILARIOUS. If you are a Bill Murray fan, you will laugh all the way through! Good stuff.
A CLASSIC DAY IN THE LIFE OF ONE OF CINEMA'S GREAT CLOWNS
2009-09-21 - Bill Murray's impeccable sense of timing, and Andie MacDowell's charm make this film of an egomaniacal weatherman caught in Time's revolving door one of the most fun-filled, comedies ever. Forced to relive the same miserable day over, and over, with consistantly hilarious changes that don't, at first, seem to be heading in any particular direction because there are no consequences for a man forced into this particular predicament, Bill's character ( Phil ) gradually begins to become human. The film is pure magic.
Groundhog Day is a classic
2009-09-12 - It was great seeing this movie again. This is probably Bill Murray's best movie. The theme is timeless and I'd recommend it to entire family. I especially enjoyed watching it a second time with the producer comments. There were a lot of facts about the movie that I didn't know. So get the Blue Ray version and enjoy.
A Classic from Bill Murray
2009-09-02 - Great performance and shows a great moment on Bill Murray's work. You can't go wrong
