  • Editorial Review:
Bill Murray does warmth in his most consistently effective post-Stripes comedy, a romantic fantasy about a wacky weatherman forced to relive one strange day over and over again, until he gets it right. Snowed in during a road-trip expedition to watch the famous groundhog encounter his shadow, Murray falls into a time warp that is never explained but pays off so richly that it doesn't need to be. The elaborate loop-the-loop plot structure cooked up by screenwriter Danny Rubin is crystal-clear every step of the way, but it's Murray's world-class reactive timing that makes the jokes explode, and we end up looking forward to each new variation. He squeezes all the available juice out of every scene. Without forcing the issue, he makes us understand why this fly-away personality responds so intensely to the radiant sanity of the TV producer played by Andie MacDowell. The blissfully clueless Chris Elliott (Cabin Boy) is Murray's nudnik cameraman. --David Chute

    Groundhog Day [Region 2] Reviews:
I watch it over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over 5 Star Review
2009-12-05 - I bought this dvd a few years ago and forgot to review it then, so I'll do so now.

This is one of my favorite movies, and the special edition (there might be a more recent anniversary edition available now) has a number of great features, including a fascinating commentary track by Harold Ramis and others on the development of the story and the filming of the picture. This movie contains many perfectly developed sequences that intertwine throughout. You enjoy it the first few times just because of the humor, or the odd love story between the two main characters, and you notice more and more fine points that fit together as you watch it over, and over....

This is Bill Murray at his self-deprecating funniest, and Andie MacDowell at her gosh-darn pretty wholesomeist. The supporting cast, from Murray's brother Brian Doyle and Chris Elliott, all the way down to the groundhog, do great turns. I realize that this is a film that some people don't get the first time they watch it - I think I read that Roger Ebert didn't like it at first, before eventually pulling his old review and including Groundhog Day among his "Great Films".

The scene in the bowling alley bar ("I'd say you're a half-empty kind of guy, Phil."), followed by the car chase on the railroad tracks, is laugh out loud funny. The montage of Phil's manipulative and increasingly frustrating attempts to seduce Rita, followed by the second chase scene (Don't drive angry!), followed by the montage of Phil's ineffective attempts to commit suicide, are comedy masterpieces. The montage of Phil's attempts to better himself daily, and help others, are the heart of the film.

There's a message that I understand is attractive to many viewers - a Buddhist humanism that permeates the tale of Murray's self-perfection - sort of like Siddhartha with an alarm clock. I don't go for that belief system, but it is an appealing thought that if you could relive your life and value each moment and live it to the fullest, with all of the best intentions, that you could undergo the sort of transformation that Murray's character has by the end of the film.

Stuck in Carlisle, again. 4 Star Review
2009-10-17 - An excellent turn by Bill Murray carries the film. Andie McDowell, while an attractive model, does not display strong acting chops here. She is runover by the Murray star vehicle. Decent supporting cast with Chris Elliot, Brian Doyle Murray, Steven Tobolsky and others round out the picture. With Murray's patented mugging and fish out of water character stuck in the same day, in the same place ad infitinum it could have been quite tedious to watch, but as he relived the same day over and over there was a growth in his character's humanity. Perhaps a kind of pergatory for his lack of humanity. Reminded me of being stuck in Carlisle, Pa. in the snow and having been told to stay just another day or two on an assignment. I find it an enjoyable screwball comedy.

If Bill Murray fan, a MUST SEE! 5 Star Review
2009-10-16 - This movie is HILARIOUS. If you are a Bill Murray fan, you will laugh all the way through! Good stuff.

A CLASSIC DAY IN THE LIFE OF ONE OF CINEMA'S GREAT CLOWNS 5 Star Review
2009-09-21 - Bill Murray's impeccable sense of timing, and Andie MacDowell's charm make this film of an egomaniacal weatherman caught in Time's revolving door one of the most fun-filled, comedies ever. Forced to relive the same miserable day over, and over, with consistantly hilarious changes that don't, at first, seem to be heading in any particular direction because there are no consequences for a man forced into this particular predicament, Bill's character ( Phil ) gradually begins to become human. The film is pure magic.

Groundhog Day is a classic 5 Star Review
2009-09-12 - It was great seeing this movie again. This is probably Bill Murray's best movie. The theme is timeless and I'd recommend it to entire family. I especially enjoyed watching it a second time with the producer comments. There were a lot of facts about the movie that I didn't know. So get the Blue Ray version and enjoy.
