Part concert, part documentary, part travelogue, this video hit duplicates the sleeper success of Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli's album compilations and underscores his unique crossover appeal. In the U.S., Bocelli's critical response has been confined to fusillades of scorn from classical and opera writers, but the bulletproof superstar is better understood in the context of Europe's more established tradition of pop-classical fusions. Ironically, fans abroad are less prickly than stateside arbiters about the need for a discreet wall between high (classical) art and low (pop) kitsch, which Bocelli cheerfully ignores with his mix of operatic chestnuts, soft pop, and traditional Italian songs.

Indeed, despite interview segments in which he proclaims his love of opera or proudly recalls an apprenticeship to operatic veteran Franco Corelli, Bocelli comes across as more fan than virtuoso. But if his voice can prompt technical cavils from hard-core opera buffs, the blind singer's emotional directness and relative lack of onstage preening explain much of his populist appeal. Featured songs include warhorse arias, leading off with the "Louie, Louie" of tenor showpieces, Turandot's "Nessun Dorma," and duets with gruff Italian pop-rocker Zucchero and sopranos Nuccia Focile and Sarah Brightman (who buddies up for the tear-jerking closer, "Time to Say Goodbye").

Even with the marquee bonus of those guests, however, A Night in Tuscany gets its biggest boost from the seductive Italian countryside, prominently featured in between-song segments, and in the romantic concert setting, Pisa's Piazza dei Cavalieri. --Sam Sutherland

Andrea Bocelli: A Night in Tuscany [Region 2] Reviews:
The Ultimate Bocelli 5 Star Review
2009-09-04 - The producers knew what they were doing when they put this exquisite DVD together. Andreas Bocelli brings the warmth of the Italian city-scape into our homes with this magnificent combination of pure tenor, classical music and contempory presentation in an old country setting while delivering studio-quality sound and visual effects. Whether you choose to indulge in this presentation with eyes open or closed, you will embrace the experience, smiling!

The First DVD , And Still Bocelli's Best 5 Star Review
2009-01-19 - This was the first, and probably still the best, of the Andrea Bocelli concerts on DVD. It sort of "put him on the map" here in the U.S. I have bought several other Bocelli DVDs since and none compares to this one.

Not being a fan of "opera," the fact I rated this a "five-stars" the first time I saw it and it remains such, is a tribute to how good a singer this man is, and how beautifully filmed is this concert.

Bocelli has the most pleasing male voice I have ever heard and even though I don't understand Italian, just listening to him is pure pleasure. The concert setting, in a town square in Tuscany, is reminiscent of Yanni's Acropolis concert, with multi-colored lights used on the background buildings. It's very appealing, and the more I watch this the more impressed I am with the camera-work. That also includes a couple of videos interspersed during the concert and a portrait of Andrea's town and of his immediate family.

As a novice to this music genre like me becomes more familiar with these beautiful songs, the better they sound and quickly become favorites. Bocelli has three guests during the concert: one of which has become quite famous in her own right since this appearance: Sarah Brightman. Also joining the famous Italian tenor with a few duets are Nuccia Focile (a little too soprano-ish for me) and Zucchero, who reminded me (with a better voice) of Joe Cocker. One of the videos is also a duet, with Bocelli and Marta Sanchez, a pretty woman with a nice voice. The scenery in that video is really nice, too.

Caruso, Pavaratti and others may be more famous and technically superior but this guy is the easiest on the ears. When you want to relax with beautiful music and great concert, you cannot beat this DVD.

A beautiful performance! 5 Star Review
2008-07-20 - I have always been deeply moved by music to the very core of my being, at times bringing tears and actual pain in hearing particularly moving pieces performed. Andrea Bocelli's singing comes from within his soul and inner self, as demonstrated by his incredible expressiveness of what he is singing. He also has a huge lung/breath capacity, and to me unimagineable capabilities in controlling it. I am definitely not an opera officianado, but thoroughly enjoy this concert of familiar exerpts including some in duet with Nuccia Focile. The sections of the tape which are of him speaking of his home and family are especially endearing and much appreciated. Too often we put artists/operatic singers on a pedestal and fail to remember that they, like us, are warm human beings who treasure their homes and family.

Did not come sealed. 1 Star Review
2008-01-07 - Bought this for a gift... seller said it was new. It looked new but was not wrapped up in plastic. Disc looked real but It did not look like I purchased it from a store. Did not hear about the quality of dvd yet.
Assume no news is good news!

Andrea Bocelli - A Night in Tuscany 5 Star Review
2007-11-28 - Bocelli remains a wonderful singer, this recording proves that time and again. It's fine that Bocelli is not an Opera singer, but rather a singer that sings opera (very nicely.) This wonderful singer has made his place in recorded music history.
Opera lovers and music lovers will agree, he sings very memorable and lovable songs with a magic that is unsurpassed.
    Cheers Bocelli! Cheers!
