Editorial Review:
Fourteen year old Alyssa (Schroeder) has been living with her Grandmother Lucy (Ross) since the death of her mother a year ago. It s been a tough year for both of them and Lucy decides it s time for Alyssa to go to the Bahamas to live with Hawk (Dunbar), dedicated dolphin researcher and the father she never knew she had. Alyssa s arrival on the island comes at a decisively inconvenient time for Hawk, who is busy fighting greedy politicians and experts who are determined to turn his research center into a tacky tourist attraction. It s a prickly relationship between Hawk and Alyssa, but Tamika (Adams), Hawks girlfriend, and Daniel (Harris), Tamika s father, smooth the way. Alyssa soon adjusts to island life and discovers the gift she shares with her father for communicating with dolphins, a skill which leads her into a powerful relationship with a wild dolphin which her father, for legitimate scientific reasons, cannot condone. But when the powers-that-be threaten to close down her father s research station, it is Alyssa and her wild friend who hold the key, and have the power to bring all parties together.
Eye of the Dolphin Reviews:
loved it
2009-03-18 - great movie. i always loved movies like this. like flipper the movie, holiday in the sun, free willy 1-3, there all great.
Cute movie for tweens
2008-11-11 - This movie had a cute story line and lovely shots of dolphins and the ocean. My tweens and their friends loved it and watched it over and over.
A Very Good Family Film
2008-10-11 - Eye of the Dolphin is the story of Alyssa (played by Carly Schroeder), a trouble fourteen year old girl who has lost her mother and is trying her best to cope. At wits end, Alyssa's grandmother takes her to the Bahama's, to meet her father for the first time. It is here that the story takes off.
For a family film, the first fifteen minutes are a little rough for younger children. Alyssa smokes pot, hands her grandmother a condom, and expresses her teen angst. Though none of these scenes made us want to turn the film off, they caught us a bit off guard. But with that said, Alyssa's problems are not just pointless scenes. They set the table for the rest of this beautiful and touching film.
The story is ultimately feel good. The cast of characters are very lovable, and you feel an instant connection with all of the actors in this film. The casting is superb. And by the end of the film, you delight in Alyssa's triumph, and feel glad that you - and your family - just invested the time to watch this movie.
Uplifting and entertaining. A must see family flick.
Is this a joke?
2008-08-28 - 'Cause I don't get it. This movie has rave reviews, received awards, and looked like a good movie. My husband and I agreed that this seemed like a high school film-class project. The acting was forced to the point of being painful and if there was a steady-cam, it must have gotten sand in it so the image jerks at a particular frequency, making it difficult to watch. Whatever budget they had probably went entirely toward working with the dolphins. Regardless of the message the movie conveyed, it was too irritating and slow to watch. After 35 minutes, we couldn't take it any more and stuffed it back in the box.
One star only for the dolphins
2008-08-22 - I picked this DVD up at the library. The story moves along slowly with poor acting by pretty much unknown actors. It is the typical Disney style story of the troubled teen whose life is spiraling out of control only to find her father who she thought was dead. Of course in the beginning father rejects this sudden surprise and a series of events happen that bring them together in the end. I quit watching the movie and tossed it back in the return box at the library. Zzzzzzzz
