Editorial Review:
The producers of Wedding Crashers score huge laughs with the Rated Edition of The Comebacks.
You'll laugh till you punt watching this hilarious spoof comedy that tackles the most memorable scenes from your favorite sports movies. It's the story of Lambeau Fields (David Koechner), an out-of-luck coach trying to lead a ragtag team of fumbling footballers to victory before his long-suffering wife (Melora Hardin) leaves him and his sexy gymnast daughter (Brooke Nevin) gets bent out of shape!
Description of The Comebacks:
David Koechner (Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Bergundy) gives an outsized Farley-esque performance as Lambeau Fields, the worst coach in history, who accepts a position at Heartland State University, home of the hapless football team, the Comebacks, in rural Texas. Will he ignore his wife (Melora Hardin from The Office) in pursuit of victory? Will his rebellious gymnast teenage daughter (Brooke Nevin) choose the team's hotshot me-first player (Jackie Long) or the tutu-wearing quarterback (Matthew Lawrence) whose fumbles are an embarrassment to his father, a Cher impersonator? Will the star player Aceel Tare (Robert Ri'chard) live up to his name (mispronounced by Coach as "ACL Tear")? Will the team make it to the--oy--Toilet Bowl? The Comebacks tackles the inspirational "one last shot" sports movie, but is mostly content to simply quote other sports films and TV shows, including Field of Dreams, Bend It Like Beckham, Stick It, Remember the Titans, Invincible, Miracle, Dodge Ball (itself a sports film spoof), the Friday Night Lights TV series, and Radio (with a mentally challenged character named--wait for it--iPod). Some of The Comebacks is inspired. The Coach, demanding total commitment from his players, insists they flunk their courses and rack up felonies and probations. The fractious team bonds over Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" in a lip-synced, pyrotechnic performance worthy of MTV's Music Video Awards. And Bill Buckner wins the good sports award for a cameo that re-creates his momentous error in the '86 World Series. Despite several fumbles (a 15-yard penalty for the Andy Dick cameo), The Comebacks manages to score enough laughs to cheer Date Movie/Epic Movie fans, although it's not in the same league as Not Another Teen Movie or the Scary Movie films. --Donald Liebenson
The Comebacks Reviews:
hillarious
2009-11-17 - omg this movie is so funny i love it. I really enjoyed this movie and i hope you will to. I recommend this movie for everyone.
cheap
2009-07-06 - Spoof movies are becoming too many with few good actors or for that matter good scripts. Some scenes are funny, but the low talent acting hurts the movie.
the funniest spoof
2009-07-03 - This was the ultimate funniest spoof, its just like scary movie 3 and 4 but its about football, its a little dirty in some ways but if you like football and spoofs this is a perfect combination
Advice! Watch It When You're High On Meds
2009-06-17 - Weird thing was, I got two versions of this movie, or at least I think I saw two. The first time I watched this, it cracked me up and I had a great time and loved the movie. Second time, I thought it sucked big time.
Only difference was, the first time I watched it, I was loopy on fever medication.
So my advice is, watch this when you're loopy on meds and this movie might appear a lot funnier than it really is. This is not a joke as I looked around hours just to find this movie online only to be severely disappointed, thinking I would get a good laugh as the first time I watched it.
Worth A Chuckle (Or Two)
2009-03-27 - THE COMEBACKS is one of the dumbest, crudest, foul, uncouth, imbecilic movies I've ever seen (and based on all the films I've seen that's saying something, folks).
But. . .who cares?
This is a film that allows you to sit back and let ribald David Koechner take you on one wild and zany ride as the hapless, inept football coach Lambeau Fields (football fans will adore that name). Koechner isn't just over the top: He's practically in your grill as he tries to mold his team of dysfunctional malcontents into a competitive college football contender. Along the way we're treated to one sophomoric sight gag after another, and the film repeatedly spoofs several contemporary movies with all the delicacy of a doberman in a meat locker.
But again, who cares? THE COMEBACKS is intentionally bad (and dumb), and definitely worth the handful of chuckles it brings. The team's music video spoof to Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" and Frank Caliendo in the broadcast booth playing both Al Michaels and John Madden are must-see viewing.
