Description of The Witches (Keepcase):
This splendid adventure-fantasy from 1990 was adapted from Roald Dahl's book and directed by maverick British filmmaker Nicolas Roeg, who turned out to be a perfect (if seemingly unlikely) interpreter of Dahl's fiendishly clever tale of witchcraft in contemporary England. Scary, funny, and wildly entertaining, it's all about a young boy named Luke (Jasen Fisher) whose parents have died in a tragic accident, and whose grandmother (Mai Zetterling) takes him to a posh hotel in England, where a secret coven of witches is holding its annual convention. The Grand High Witch (Anjelica Huston, in a scene-stealing performance) has decreed that all children in England be turned into mice, and Luke and his pal Bruno (Charles Potter) are the first victims on the list. That's when the movie magicians from Jim Henson's creature shop have their work cut out for them, turning Luke and Bruno into clever little rodents and The Witches into a dazzling display of imaginative special effects, using a seamless combination of real mice and superb animatronic puppets. Director Roeg doesn't compromise the sinister edge of Dahl's story, but comedy gets equal time from the brilliant cast including Brenda Blethyn (from Secrets and Lies and Little Voice), Rowan Atkinson (of Black Adder and Mr. Bean fame), and Jane Horrocks (Little Voice) as the Grand High Witch's beleaguered assistant. Although it was largely neglected during its brief theatrical release, this wonderful movie has since enjoyed a thriving appreciation on video--see it and you'll understand why. --Jeff Shannon

I Love This Movie!! 
2009-11-15 - I fell in love with this movie as a child and still enjoy it as an adult. I had it in VHS format, but was happy to find it on Amazon.com on DVD for a great price! It is a really neat movie - great for older kids and beyond. It is full of adventure, suspense, some humor, and a great story line that will keep you wondering what will happen next. My mom and I have a favorite line from the movie: "You may remove your shoes" (the grand high witch tells the other witches at their conference.)
Angelica Houston Leads the Coven in The Witches
2009-11-10 - I've seen this movie many times and love Angelica Houston's performance. After seeing it so many times, I wanted to add it to my DVD collection, and ordered it through one of the vendors (silverfox) here on Amazon. I was very disappointed that I never received the DVD, although I contacted the vendor by email twice. The worst part of this is that they never bothered to reply my emails, and only responded after contact from Amazon. This review is certainly more about the poor customer service of the vendor than it is about the movie. However, it is a wonderful movie that will keep youngsters and the young at heart entertained, although some scenes may be a wee too scary for the under 5 set.
Don't buy this item from Amazon! They don't have it!
2009-10-25 - This is an awesome movie! I saw it at the theatre when it first came out, and now I want it for my grandson.
I just tried to buy it from Amazon hoping to have it for a gift. Amazon shows that if you buy 2 other movies with this one, you get all 3 for a deal.
I received the other 2 movies, but NOT "The Witches" which is the movie I wanted in the first place.
After waiting for 10 days, I finally got an email from Amazon stating that they don't have "The Witches" and they will take it off of their website. Well guess what. It's still being advertised as in stock, and Amazon is still offering a deal if you buy 2 other movies with it.
Don't believe it. You'll get the 2 other movies, but not "The Witches".
I would get it in writing first, from Amazon, that they really do have this movie in stock!

2009-08-29 - this movie got to me in a very timely fashion and was in good shape. I didn't prefer the movie all that much, I had actually thought it was a different one but this had nothing to do with the seller. Thanks anyway - Sheri
