Description of Mama's Boy:
The great cast of Mama's Boy--Jon Heder, Diane Keaton, Jeff Daniels, the always-awesome Anna Faris--help lift this indie gem from its semi-predictable setup. Heder plays Jeffrey, a 29-year-old dweeb who still lives at home with his mom, Jan (Diane Keaton). Widowed at a young age, Keaton has clung to her only son, but not as much as he's clung to her since the death of his dad. The two have settled into a routine--game night, special menus--like, well, an old married couple. Until Jan is swept off her feet by motivational speaker Mert Rosenbloom (Jeff Daniels), who preaches the ground-breaking theory of "Positivity" ("...which goes back thousands of years--Jesus was really a big practitioner"). Then Jeffrey acts out--in a way more appropriate to a 3-year-old than a grown man. Jan and Mert have a touching, believable chemistry, and Jeffrey's tantrums are cringeworthy but hilarious. "You can't win back my affection with Manwich!" he shrieks at his appeasing mom. Does Jeffrey get his own chance to grow up and move on? Quicker than you can say "enter oddball Goth girl." Anna Faris plays Nora, an aspiring singer-songwriter with rather a limited repertoire; every song is about corporate America eating our souls ("I'm calling my first album 'Bed, Bath and Bulls--t'!"). Not surprisingly, she also has a heart of gold. As she works her quirky charm on Jeffrey, everyone in the film gets a chance to blossom. --A.T. Hurley
Mama's Boy Reviews:
Only on a rainy night.........................
2008-10-06 - Just simply not that good. Heder is one of the most overrated actors on the market today, and he displayed why in full during this movie. Keaton and Daniels have been great at times, but seem to have sunken to a low level. I gave it two stars, simply because it did manage a couple of belly laughs, but otherwise, very, very forgettable.
Mama's Boy
2008-08-03 - Mama's Boy is a comedy/drama with fun characters. We have the neurotic Jeffrey (Jon Heder) who lives with his mother, there's the motivational speaker Mert (Jeff Daniels) who talks in clichés ("the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams"), the untalented aspiring singer Nora (Anna Faris) who only sings about how she hates big corporations, and of course Jeffrey's employer Seymour (Eli Wallach). The most normal character is Jeffrey's mother Jan (Diane Keaton). All the actors do a great job. Diane Keaton is one of my favorite actors, but here both Daniels and Heder steal scenes from her.
These characters are given some hilarious moments but the script is a bit formulaic and after about one hour it turns into more of a drama than a comedy. It's still a movie well worth watching.
I am a Mama's Boy...sort of
2008-06-19 - This is a great movie, filled with good humor, a great cast, and smooth writing. John Heder perfects the role of being a overbearing Mama's Boy who just won't quit. Jeff Daniels is in his element reminiscent of his role in Dumb and Dumber, he pulls this off with expertise. Diane Keaton is excellent she seems to be in every simple but offbeat comedies that truly capture her bubbly personality. Along with the quirky Ana Farris who is more angry in this role than others before it. She is the final touch to a simple yet hilarious romp. This idea has been done before but this is a very well written comedy that doesn't disappoint. Don't listen to reviewers who just nick pick about everything. Rent or purchase it is really good.
"The Seductive Sound Of The Astronomy Siren" ~ Love, Second Chances And Growing Up
2008-06-15 - The '07 release `Mama's Boy' delivers another fine, though surprisingly reserved performance by Joh Heder as Jeffrey, the insecure, hypochondriac, stay-at-home 29 year old who finds his world threatened when his Mother (Diane Keaton) decides to re-enter the dating scene. When new boyfriend Mert (Jeff Daniels), a life-affirming motivational speaker moves in Jeffrey's world begins to fall apart. Will he accept the newcomer into the family home with open arms or perceive him as a challenger and usurper of his Mother's affection?
There's not a lot of surprises here but it's still an entertaining watch with a soundtrack infused with `The Smiths' and `Morrissey' that work perfectly with the on-screen action. Anna Faris is also quite good as Nora, a Courtney Love(ish) songstress who falls for the hapless Mama's boy caus Jeffery to re-evaluate his sheltered existence even further.
If you're a big Jon Heder fan you'll definitely wan to had this one to your DVD collection, but thoroughly enjoyable even if you're not.
My Rating: -3 1/2 Stars-.
NOT READY TO LAUNCH
2008-06-10 - JON HEDER MAKES A SPECTACULAR APPEARANCE AGAIN-ONLY THIS TIME WITH HAIR DYED BLACK BUT WITH THE USUAL BUTTERCUP BOYISH FACE, PIERCING BLUE EYES AND GLAMOROUS SENSUOUS SMILE.
THIS IS A TALE OF A 29 YEAR-OLD MAN WHO DOES NOT THINK TWICE ABOUT BEING SETTLED AT HOME WITH MOTHER (DIANE KEATON). HIS LIFESTYLE IS COMFORTALBE PLUS AS AN AVID ASTRONOMER WANNE-BE, IS WELL ON HIS WAY TO MAKING SOME ASTRONOMICAL DISCOVERIES. IN THE INTERIM HOWEVER, THE FIRST ASTRONOMICAL DISCOVERY HE RUNS INTO IS THE FACT THAT IT'S TIME TO LEAVE HOME....THAT IS WHEN A BOYFRIEND OF MOM MOVES IN. FROM THERE, IT'S POTENTIAL STEPSON AGAINST WOULD-BE STEPFATHER, AND THE FIGHT IS ON! HE'S READY TO LAUNCH INTO SPACE BUT NOT EXACTLY FROM HIS COMFORTABLE HOME.
