Editorial Review:
There are some filmmaking teams that invariably bring out the best in each other, and that's definitely the case with director Carroll Ballard and cinematographer Caleb Deschanel. They previously collaborated on The Black Stallion and Never Cry Wolf, and Fly Away Home is their third family film that deserves to be called a classic. Inspired by Bill Lishman's autobiography, the movie tells the story of a 13-year-old girl (Anna Paquin) who goes to live with her estranged, eccentric father (Jeff Daniels) following the death of her mother. At first she's withdrawn and reclusive, but finds renewed happiness when she adopts an orphaned flock of baby geese and, later, teaches them to migrate using an ultralight. Sensitively directed and stunningly photographed, the movie has flying sequences that are nothing short of astonishing, and Daniels and Paquin (Oscar winner for The Piano) make a delightful father-daughter duo. (Ironically, the digital video disc is not available in widescreen format, but the image quality is brilliant.) --Jeff Shannon
Fly Away Home Reviews:
A Movie of Mixed Feelings
2009-11-12 - This movie is a great one. Has a slight bit of "Imprinting". I first watched this movie in science class ( I have NO idea why). But the first time I watched it. It must be bought on amazon video on demand! Should be made a classic. So I highly suggest buying this movie if you love Crying during a part of the movie. and Laugh at the same time. Also loving to fly. Its a must have to your collection of digital Library! 5 Of 5!
A family-friendly movie that affirms love in its many aspects
2009-09-20 - "Fly Away Home" was a movie that I had never watched until I saw it recently and thought it would be a great movie to share with my almost 5-year-old. It stars Anna Paquin [of "The Piano" and also the recent "True Blood"] as 13-year-old Amy, who has lost her mother in a car accident and finds herself being whisked off to rural Ontario, Canada by her estranged father Tom [Jeff Daniels]. Amy struggles with her grief whilst trying to adapt to her new living conditions, including a father she barely knows. When Amy discovers a clutch of orphaned goose eggs, she takes care of the eggs until they hatch, and insists on caring for them, despite the ominous presence of an animal control officer who wants to take possession of them
The movie deals with myriad themes - grief, the bond between a young girl and the orphaned animals she loves, the pangs of adolescence, the bond between a father and child, and the simple, but true love of nature. Anna Paquin shines in the lead role, and reflects a maturity and determination uncommon in one so young. Her interactions with the geese come across as natural and credible, and are a delight to watch. I also loved watching how father and daughter eventually bond over the task of teaching the geese to migrate in the face of winter, using an ultralight!
Truly a classic in family entertainment, and a movie that sets your spirits soaring!
english only
2009-07-01 - I was not aware that this dvd had a sub title was in a foreign language. this is not what I wanted. For future orders be sure to make this clear.
love this movie
2009-05-09 - This is a great, heartwarming story - great for kids who are too old for most animated movie but too young for PG 13. The whole family will enjoy this movie!
Family freindly movie
2009-01-26 - I knew about this movie for a long time. We had a copy on VHS when our sons were small. Now that we have granddaughters, I wanted a replacement.
Jeff Daniels is known for comedy, but he takes on a serious role and does an excellent job! Dana Delaney and Anna Paquin are also very good. This movie shows what can be done if you really want to. Anna finds some eggs in a construction site, takes them home and hatches a flock of geese and trouble.
A very touching story for everyone!
