Editorial Review:
Inspired by "Gulliver's Travels," the fantasy-adventure Castle in the Sky (1986) was Hayao Miyazaki's third feature, and helped to establish his reputation as a visionary in both Japan and America. The orphan Sheeta inherited a mysterious crystal that links her to the legendary sky-kingdom of Laputa. With the help of resourceful Pazu and a rollicking band of sky pirates, she makes her way to the ruins of the once-great civilization. Sheeta and Pazu must outwit the evil Muska, who plans to use Laputa's science to make himself ruler of the world. Castle echoes elements in Myazaki's earlier Nausicaä, and anticipates imagery in his later films, from My Neighbor Totoro to Spirited Away. Disney's new English dub, which features Anna Paquin (Sheeta), James Van Der Beek (Pazu), and Cloris Leachman (pirate matriarch Dola), is lively and close in tone to the original Japanese, if a bit talkier. The exciting flying sequences, appealing characters, and fantastic vision of a steam-powered future Jules Verne might have imagined make Castle in the Sky a must-have for fans of Japanese and Western animation. Tenkû no shiro Rapyuta [Region 2] Reviews:
Castle in the sky is for all ages
2009-11-11 - I purchased this movie first for myself and then for my nephew when he told me repeatedly as it was his favorite movie in the world. This is a wonderful story about a young boy who who helps a young girl overcome the villians that want to steal her necklace and its powers for themselves. They join together and eventually sacrifice the power in the necklace to save the world. This movie would be loved by anyone that loved "Howl's Moving Castle". Great Japanese animation and wonderful and meaningful fun.
Great Movie
2009-09-28 - I bought this DVD several years ago and I enjoyed it very much. This time, I bought one for my friend, who will enojoy it just as much as I did.
Great movie, watch many times
2009-09-26 - This is one of our favorites. We've watched it many times. Most of the Miyazaki films are great. Well worth buying for any age. Pass along to anyone, especially kids.
A wonderful "Castle in the Sky" movie
2009-09-20 - My husband and I had the blessing to watch this wonderful dvd yesterday and let me tell you that its a great movie. If you like to watch any films that are a creation of fantasy and cheerful creativity then this is your movie. The movie has some dark moments but the message of the movie turns out to be very uplifting that I would go as far as to say that one could watch this movie with youngsters. As one of the reviewers mentioned much of the movie takes place up in the sky but the movie carefully mixes fantasy and cartoon originality in such a way that it ends up being very pleasing to watch. This is a great family movie that will appeal to all ages. At the beginning of the film, it showed a scene where one of Pixar's creators was recommending the film and how he is friends with the Castle in the Sky's creator. I already had a good feeling about the movie but when one of Pixar's own creators recommends this movie it gives a great hint that this movie is also a classic (considering that Pixar has made many wonderful movies in their own right).
Awesome!
2009-08-04 - I love this movie. The art is bright, music enjoyable and adds emotion to the scenes, and the story is awesome. It begins with the girl, Sheeta, kidnapped by people wanting her pendant, and when they are attacked she falls from the aircraft she was held captive on. Her pandant glows to life and she begins to float down. A boy, Patzu, finds her floating and helps her. They both get entangled in the hunt for a legendary floating city.
It is an awesome fast paced story. I could watch it a million times in a row and not get bored.
