  • Editorial Review:
One of the most iconic teen comedies of the 1980s, Sixteen Candles, returns in an all-new Flashback Edition with never-before-seen bonus features! Samantha Baker (Molly Ringwald) is ready to make the most of her sweet sixteenth birthday … if only someone in her family would remember it. She’s your average teen, enduring creepy freshmen, spoiled siblings, confused parents and the “Big Blonde on Campus” who stands between her and the boy of her dreams. From writer/director John Hughes (The Breakfast Club, Weird Science), Sixteen Candles is a warm-hearted coming-of-age comedy that helped define a generation!

    Description of Sixteen Candles:
Molly Ringwald established herself as the teen queen of the '80s in this fresh comedy. The movie is a day in the life of Samantha, whose 16th birthday is turning out to be anything but sweet. All the traumas of teendom come down on one long day, which sees Samantha surrounded by dithery relatives, mooning over a high school hunk, and pursued by a sawed-off Lothario. Sixteen Candles marked the directing debut of John Hughes, and its goofy energy displayed a promising talent with a great ear for high school lingo ... a promise neglected since Hughes became, after Home Alone, a one-man entertainment industry. There are some pretty crass moments (Why the stereotype of the foreign-exchange student from Asia?), but Ringwald's steady appeal smoothes over the rough spots. As the pubescent, self-styled lady-killer, Anthony Michael Hall turns in a hilarious portrait of a young swinger; he and Ringwald would reteam with Hughes for The Breakfast Club, another key teen picture of the decade. --Robert Horton

    Sixteen Candles Reviews:
    Amazing movie! 5 Star Review
2009-10-11 - An amazing movie from the 80s.
    Funny and realistic.
A perfect portrait of the american society.
Anthony Michael Hall and Molly Ringwald... Great!!

Not an acceptable PG movie!! 1 Star Review
2009-10-06 - Warning! If you are careful about selecting movies that are appropriately rated for your kids, don't buy this one! It carries a PG rating, but by today's standards, it should be R, based on language and nudity. We had to turn it off. If you think anything goes in today's world, then go ahead and buy. I have nothing else to say about this movie, because it was stopped after 15 minutes or so.

    Movie review 1 Star Review
2009-08-03 - The movie contains an inappropriate language. Too many filthy and dirty words.
If the Hollywood had skipped those bad words, it would have been a good movie.

Some pretty off color teen stuff here 2 Star Review
2009-07-15 - In contrast to The Breakfast Club this Molly Ringwald movie is pretty tasteless at times:
    1) one dollar to see her panties in the boy's bathroom
    2) sister getting high on muscle relaxants at her wedding
    3) house trashing seniors party
    4) sex with a drunken girl by a stranger
All in the name of humor I guess, but this is not a family movie.
I really didn't like it and I usually do like good teen movies.

    Sweet 16 4 Star Review
2009-06-11 - Samantha (Molly Ringwald) wakes up on the morning of her 16th birthday. This is a milestone most of us remember in one way, shape or form. After all, at 16 we're about 1/2 way through high school and just 2 years(!) away from having to be considered as adults. Just one problem: everyone has forgotten about Samantha's birthday. Oh no! With her older sister getting married, Samantha's family has had too many distractions to keep up with anything involving normalcy.

    Poor Samantha is also suffering the heartache of suffering a crush on a senior who could never return her love. Or could he? As Hamlet would say, THAT is the question! {Ah, nothing like teenage puppy love; my oh my how I remember it well}

If you're into 80s nostalgia (like me!) then this DVD is a must-have. It stars Anthony Michael Hall as a mega-geek; just before his career flamed out. It also stars a young John Cusack in a bit part. Even though Cusack has maybe a dozen lines, one can still see the genesis of the on-screen charisma he would exude - little wonder that charisma launched him into stardom.

Looking back 20+ years later, these so called "brat pack" movies are more important than ever for people like me who grew up during the 80s. While my HS years were far from the best years of my life, I still indulge in reminiscing from time to time. If you do the same, then this one is for you!

Just one note: if this film were rated today, it would be at LEAST a PG-13 if not an "R." So.....if you're thinking about buying this for a daughter / niece who is turning 16, I'd think twice about it. I'll leave it @ that.
