    Description of Mahogany:
One simple question, people: Do you know where you're goin' to? And furthermore, Do you like the things that life is showin' you? These questions are posed in the unavoidable theme song (a huge Seventies hit) from Mahogany, a splashy, diva-sized vehicle for Diana Ross. Miss Ross was hot off her unexpected and critically approved starring role in Lady Sings the Blues when she embarked on this musical, a rags-to-riches saga of a Chicago girl who dreams of being a fashion designer but becomes a supermodel instead. Original director Tony Richardson was replaced behind the camera by Motown founder and puppetmaster supreme Berry Gordy, who knew something about turning Ross into an idealized vision of femininity (for more on their relationship, check out the fictionalized version in Dreamgirls).

Ross looks a little overwhelmed by the plot machinations, which take her from the orbit of a regular-guy activist (Billy Dee Williams) into the glam world of European fashion--the latter courtesy of a cranky, unstable photographer played by Anthony Perkins. Perkins is sky-high fun in this thing, as though he suspected the movie was in trouble and decided to let the tics and nerviness fly. These days Mahogany is treasured either as a fond childhood memory or as a ripe camp-fest, and that's probably about where it belongs. Still, it looks positively restrained next to the other big diva musical of the same historical moment, Barbra Streisand's 1976 A Star is Born. --Robert Horton

This movie is about a struggling fashion worker becoming the top model of the world .
"The theme from Mahogany" is probally one of my favorite songs from Ross.Do you know where your going to? That says it all.
The part I LOVE most about this movie is the ending.I've never seen a MORE happier ending ever in my life.I will never understand WHY Diana Ross didn't become a HUGE movie star after "Lady Sings the blues," and "Mahogany."

    Great quality 5 Star Review
2009-09-11 - It's my first time ordering online and the shipping time was great. That quality of the movie was very good. I'm glad to add this movie to my collection. Especially if you're a Diane Ross fan :-)

Diana at her best! 5 Star Review
2009-08-26 - I love Mahogany! It is one of Diva Diana's best movies. She is a fashion icon and one that young black women can aspire to. Billy Dee's classic line "Success is nothing without someone you love to share it with" is so true! If you enjoy a dramaedy then you'll enjoy this.

" My Diva Diana!" 5 Star Review
2009-06-20 - After "Lady Sings The Blues" became not only a boxoffice hit but a critical smash, Paramount wanted to capitilize on the allure of Diana Ross at the movies. Fresh from winning an Oscar nomination as Best Actress for "Lady", Diana stars in this small film about a woman who grew up poor in the projects to being one of the most famous fashion designers in the world. The movie is definitely a Diana Ross film in more ways than one; the script was tailored for her and there is a lot of Diana in the lines of the film. It was actually Diana's first choice in her younger days to be a fashion designer, but ultimately her powerful voice gave way to her becoming one of the greatest singers of all-time. Most of the fashions used in "Mahogany" are Diana Ross originals. Diana also demanded, and got, her "Lady" co-star Billy Dee Williams for this film, and their chemistry is impeccable. The theme from "Mahogany" titled "Do You Know Where Your going To?" is one of the most beautiful and haunting movie songs ever. The DVD is pretty much a barebones edition but it comes in widescreen and is enhanced for 16.9 TVs, a photo gallery is included, and english subtitles are a part of the package.
