Editorial Review:
On March 5-7, 1971, the one and only Queen of Soul headlined Bill Graham's world-famous rock venue Fillmore West. Her connection with the enthralled audience proved intense, and the shows were a seminal breakthrough for Aretha's own peerless legacy and for the popularization of soul music overall. Disc 1 features the original single-disc album Aretha Live At Fillmore West, updated to present two previously edited tracks in their entirety including Franklin's momentous duet with Ray Charles--who just happened to be in the audience--on "Spirit In The Dark". Disc 2 is comprised of rare alternate versiouns previously available only on the very limited edition, now out-of-print, Rhino Handmade title Don't Fight The Feeling: The Complete Aretha Franklin & King Curtis Live At Fillmore West.
Live at Fillmore West Reviews:
AWESOME
2009-11-17 - One of best ever live recordings. Only thing I would change is too many Pop songs played in catering to white suburban audience, But this is AUTHENTIC soul music at its finest. Cannot beat Aretha backed by King Curtis' band--except maybe by adding in Ray Charles...which she does on one song!
love it,love it.love it.
2009-10-01 - i love great live performances. when you hear this cd therese a point when you feel like you are there.
Experiencing Aretha Live!
2009-09-15 - Aretha Franklin's Live At Fillmore was suggested to me by another fan. This CD is all that and a big bag of chips.
Aretha Franklin has so much energy and you can tell she is a true entertainer.
The crowd screaming her name makes you feel as though you are in San Francisco at the Fillmore West for the concert.
Her calling Ray Charles on stage to perform was awesome.
Every song is crisp and clear. The band is with her song for song.
i was surprised of the two CD's from different performances. I can listen to both and still feel like I want more.
aretha arrives on time.
2009-07-17 - The purchase was a gift for my sister who lives way out in the country. She loves Aretha Franklin and hadn't heard this fabulous cd. It arrived
on time. That was the most important thing to me. She called and thanked me for it so it must be an excellent quality cd. I've never had a complaint about the quality of Amazon.com products.
Aretha +King Curtis=AMAZING
2009-06-23 - As of this writing, there is a copy of the Rhino Handmade 4CD set of this material going for over 500 bucks. For less than 10% of that price,by getting both Aretha's 2 disc set and King Curtis' single disc, you get a healthy chunk of the boxset. And it should be noted that the Aretha set shows up in many a spinner rack in drugstores for 8 bucks(that is how I got mine and I've seen it in lots of these places). I've owned the Curtis set since it came out(hey, instrumentals always grab me ahead of vocals)but Aretha's set is indeed the diamond in the rough raved about here. Of interest to me with the additional material is her cover of Jimmy Webb's "Mixed-Up Girl"(oddly enough, performed as there is a real mix-up somehow between the singer, the backup singers, and the band). This tune was done by Thelma Houston's debut,"Sunshower",produced by Webb and sinfully neglected on CD by Universal Music.(Weird that Joey Scarbury, yes, of Great American Hero fame, recorded this first,as "Mixed-Up Guy").
