Editorial Review:
Welcome to the world where magic reigns and monsters lurk behind every corner. Into this land of deadly dragons and menacing magicians comes our heroine--Lina Inverse, a cute, fireball-throwing sorceress who steals from the wicked and gives to herself! Along with Gourry, a handsome but dumb-as-a-rock swordsman, Lina challenges the forces of not-so-goodness as she seeks truth, justice, fame, and gold! This four-disc collection of The Slayers contains twenty-six 25-minute episodes: 1. "Angry? Lina's Furious Dragon Slave!" 2. "Bad! Mummy Men Aren't My Type!" 3. "Crash! Red and White and Suspicious All Over!" 4. "Dash! Run For It! My Magic Doesn't Work!" 5. "Escape! Noonsa the Flaming Fish Man!" 6. "Focus! Rezo's the Real Enemy?!" 7. "Give Up! But Just Before We Do, the Sure Kill Sword Appears!" 8. "Help! Shabranigdo Is Reborn!" 9. "Impact! The Eve of the Great Life or Death Struggle!" 10. "Jackpot! The Great Life or Death Gamble!" 11. "Knockout! The Seyruun Family Feud!" 12. "Lovely! Amelia's Magic Journey!" 13. "Money! Knock Out Those Bounty Hunters!" 14. "Navigation! An Invitation to Sairaag!" 15. "Oh No! Lina's Wedding Rhapsody?" 16. "Passion! Shall We Give Our Lives for the Stage?" 17. "Question? He's Proposing to That Girl?" 18. "Return! The Red Priest Is Back!" 19. "Shock! Sairaag Falls!" 20. "Trouble! Rahanimu, the Furious Fish Man!" 21. "Upset! Gourry vs. Zangulus!" 22. "Vice! The One Who Was Left Behind!" 23. "Warning! Eric's Wrath!" 24. "X-Day! The Demon Beast Is Reborn!" 25. "Yes! A Final Hope: The Blessed Blade!" 26. "Zap! Victory Is Always Mine!"
Description of The Slayers - DVD Collection (Vols. 1-8):
These four discs constitute the first broadcast season of the well-liked Dungeons and Dragons-style farce The Slayers. Red-haired Lina Inverse has a typical anime heroine's hot temper and insatiable appetite for food but also a rare talent for swordplay and casting powerful spells. As she roams from town to town, she acquires a cadre of able but quarrelsome companions: Gourry, a big, blond, dumb knight; Zelgadis, a once-human chimera who practices shamanic magic; sorceress-in-training Amelia, who makes Gourry look bright and Lina appear graceful; and the shrine maiden Sylphiel. Together they make short work of the hordes of bandits, golems, werewolves, trolls, mercenaries, and evil spirits their enemies send after them. They also have to face some more formidable foes, including the wizard Vrumugun, ace swordsman Zangulus, and archsorceress Eris. But the greatest threats come from the exceedingly powerful Rezo the Red Priest and the Dark Lord, Shabranigdo. All Lina's adventures involve a lot of slapstick humor, but these episodes have a more carefree tone than the later feature and the OAVs that paired her with the overendowed Naga. The convoluted plot lurches and stumbles along, much the way Lina fumbles around after getting clobbered. Although the fate of the world is supposed to hang on the outcome of these adventures, the broad comedy prevents the various episode directors from creating much suspense or a sense of menace. The Slayers is featherweight entertainment, but one that has won many fans in both Japan and the United States. Some viewers may object to the jokes about a mincing gay dragon, Lina losing her power at "that time of the month," and the many wisecracks about her being flat-chested. Japanese filmmakers and audiences clearly have different standards of what qualifies as PC humor. "Suggested 13 Up" for violence, profanity, brief nudity, and sexual humor. --Charles Solomon
The Slayers - DVD Collection (Vols. 1-8) Reviews:
Steals from bandits and gives to..... her self?
2007-08-04 - The Slayers is about a very powerful sorcerist named lina inverse she uses her powers to steal from bandits and she takes it all for herself shes kind of the anti hero....kind of. She is flat chested and is short. She gets "rescued" by a swordsman named Gourry who wields this legendary sword of light. Gourry is not very bright and when he saves her he thinks she is a kid. In the begining they are trying to stop a demon king from being reborned and on the way some funny stuff happens. really funny and lots of action. buy it you won't regret it but you should know that it is incomplete there are more parts to it like The Slayers next and The Slayers Try and more.
No Naga The Serpent; Story is Bland.
2007-05-13 - I love the new Slayers. Naga The Serpent, genuine demons, all sorts of great DVD movies out there. But honestly, this isn't the best of Slayers by any means. I watched them all of once over the past three years. Tenchi I've watched a dozen times, Cowboy Bebop a good 20 times and the rest of my anime are always in my DVD player. This one? Not so much. I advise against it.
It's not funny and it's a chore to watch, but at least the animation is of the same quality.
great stories, great action, and comedy that is actually funny
2007-03-19 - When it comes down to amazon reviews concerning anime, I've learned to take a real deep breath while I'm making a purchase. Certain reviewers make wild claims on the so called "greatest animes of all time" and I left wondering, what the hell did I just watch?! This is the reason why I dont take most reviewers serious anymore. This right here is the kind of anime I love, not that bulls*** I gave 1 and 2 stars to and love to hate. Slayers I purchased this on the blind tip. I have to say this is one of the only anime that trys to be funny and actually succeeds. At the same time the stories can maintain a level of seriousness. And all of the characters are well developed and very likeable. I enjoyed all of the stories. From the slapstick humor to the evil demon threatening to end all humanity.
Slayers takes place during the times of swords sorcery, demons and monsters. The main character Lina Inverse is a powerful young female sorceress with an attitude. Her purpose is to rob thieves and give to herself. She meets other characters just as skilled as she is and a clumsy swordsman that suffers from severe A.D.D. Some of the stories are stand alone episodes which consist of someone wanting a rampaging dragon killed or an evil sorceress trying to marry off her daughter to a prince and grab his loot. Then some of the series has something to do with stopping a mad sorcerer from resurrecting a demon. The battles are very good and when the stories start to get serious it can truly grip you. I watched the entire 26 episodes in oneday.
Now I noticed some of the reviewers mentioned defects in the product. I cant speak on this one. I purchased the 3 disk import version. Which has all 26 episodes, with extras and the option to switch languages for under 30 bucks on another site. In fact I purchased the entire collection for way under 100 bucks. I haven't seen any defects of any kind yet. It has clear picture and the sound is perfect. As far as the japanese language is concerned. I never watched it and I never will. I could careless about that. I'm happy with what I have. I would give info where to purchase this but all the price gougers would buy the s*** up and sell it for 50 to 100 bucks. Anyways, this is a great anime. Quickly becoming one of my favorites.
Good...but one of the discs i got was corrupted.
2006-07-29 - I was able to watch Eps. 1 and 2 and part of Ep. 3 before disc A stopped working. It seems to be corrupted from that point on until the end of the first disc. I don't know if anyone else has had this problem with their discs. It was this way when I recieved it new from Amazon.com. I need to know where I can find a copy of Disc A again, or if someone's willing to loan me a copy of that disc, that works.
Otherwise, it's a great series. It would get five stars from me if the disc wasn't messed up when I bought it from here.
The Slayers ROCKS!
2005-12-15 - The Slayers Rocks!! It is the best show in the world. It is about a red headed badly tempered girl named Lina Inverse who meets a DUMB guy named Gourry. They fight and fight and fight... get captured, betrayed, and finally an independent man named Zelgodis comes in.The they kill a guy named Rezo the red priest who turns into Shabranigdo (Spelling-??????)then i calms down... Then Somebody puts a price on their head, then they meet a JUSTACE FREAK named Amelia, who likes them, hates them, and likes them again in one episode! Then then they do stuff, and find out who put a price on their heads, Eris and Rezo. I thought they killed Rezo, but then you find out about copies. Opps... A gave a little away in this review, but i left out all the humor, laughs and unneeded episodes that ROCK!!!
