Editorial Review:
So relentlessly catchy is "Soundtrack to Your Life," the single off the relentlessly catchy debut by MTV reality scenester Ashley Parker Angel, that the average vulnerable listener may begin to worry--after weeks of being able to hum nothing else--that it has literally become the soundtrack to her life. This effect can be especially troubling for boy band-haters--Angel, after all, was a founding member of the short-lived 'N Sync-like outfit O-Town--but it shouldn't be. On this solo debut, the flop-haired heartthrob comes across about as boy-band-derived as any recent entry on the modern rock charts. Which is to say, not at all. On opener "Let U Go," A.P.A. comes out rocking hard: elements of pop swirl around, but so do post-punk flourishes (a band like My Chemical Romance might have had a home in his iPod while he was recording). Later the disc takes a turn toward the mainstream, with "Crazy Beautiful," "Beautiful Lie," and "Feel So Alive" sounding as squarely pop--soaring guitars and all--as their titles suggest. But to discount Angel as a rocker because he has a way with a pop hook wouldn't be fair. Overall, this is Goo Goo Dolls-type rock, accessible but best played loud, with a surprisingly sharp edge. "Perfect Now" puts the point across best: In it, our melodic mastermind thoughtfully knocks an overachieving prom queen from her self-satisfied perch. The rub: he's not afraid to drop the "A" word in an early verse. --Tammy La Gorce
Soundtrack to Your Life Reviews:
Surprisingly good.
2007-12-03 - I have only caught a little bit of the whole MTV - O-Town thing. Didn't really get into O-Town. I came across this while searching for some good new music on Amazon to buy. I would have to say this is pretty good. I would say 7-8 out of 10-11 good. There are 5-6 songs that were just beautifully sang then there are 3-4 songs just sounded Pop-y and amature. I'd say AAP has potential. Too bad so far his solo career hasn't hit the big time yet, but I believe if he keep working on it and have good promoter he would be a big hit.
This CD was worth picking up for me...nice vocal.
Why this Has a 5-Star Rating, I'll Never Know. But Ashley's Debut, is a Decent Pop/Rock Affair.
2007-11-05 - I'm just going to rate some of the songs. Some good, some Nothing to Scream About:
*Soundtrack to Your Life - Now this is a Very Solid Song. Great Choice of a Second Single. Did He Ever Release Another? 8/10
*So Alive - Meh. It's OK, but Nothing Deep, by a Long shot. But it's Pleasant, so I like it. Enough. 7/10
*Crazy Beautiful - OK. It's Better than So Alive, I Guess. Not By Much though. 7.25/10
*Shades of Blue - Speaks on Being an Outcast (So, Me...) and Lonely (Me), and Longing (Me >_<), and Really Wanting to Belong, and Not Being so Misplaced and Lost (Was Me...). This is the Best Song Thus far, and I Have a Feeling, Another, Will Fail to be This Beautiful. Sad Ending though. 8.5/10
*Perfect Now - Probably the second best track Here. I love it. It's everything that a Pop Rock song should Be: Catchy, Possesses A Bit of Depth and it will Stay in Your Head, for Hours at A Time. 8.5/10
*Along the Way - It's the Closer, and it's Very Nice. It has a Nice Melody, and I Simply Adore the, "Dooby-Doot. Doo-Doo-Dooby-Doot's". ^_^
There are some average bumps, but mostly, this Succeeds at Being a Decent, and Somewhat Uplifting record, Throughout. Would I Purchase It for the 83 Cents, that They're Asking For, on Amazon? Nah. The Memorable Tracks, Were There, But Somewhat, Few and Far Between.
So Here I Am, Giving this particular experience A Rating of...
3.8 stars.
3-1/2 stars -- You are now leaving Boy Band City, U.S.A.
2007-10-16 - It wasn't until I read a biography about Ashley Parker until I realized that he is the same guy that was a member of boy band O-Town. Well, after taking a few years off, he attached his stepfather's last name to his and left his reality TV image behind to record Soundtrack to Your Life.
One of the best songs on here is the lead single (and opening track) "Let U Go". Also good are the last three tracks, which are mainly piano-driven: "Where Did You Go", "Along the Way" and "Apology". Actually, now that I think about it, a lot of the songs seem to be about heartbreak; half of the album, in fact. Oh, well; at least the lyrics are creative.
But some of the songs, while not bad, don't make Ashley sound much different from a lot of the other contemporary rock singers out there, especially the title track (and I think I've heard that vocal rhythm TOO many times) and "Beautiful Lie". Still, there are notable selections like "Feel So Alive" and "Crazy Beautiful". However, "Who Cares", one of those lost-girl-that-needs-to-be-saved songs, made me say just that.
Soundtrack to Your Life isn't a perfect album, but it does prove that Ashley was able to successfully break out of his old image, and there are enough good moments on here to warrant a purchase, so pick it up.

The Lost Beatle?
2007-01-13 - If "My Chemical Romance" had a place in his iPod then he must have had Sgt Peppers playing in his crib as a baby and he never forgot it. It's pretty hard to mistake the Beatlesque quality in many of the songs here and Angel certainly pulls off the similarities in fine enough quality and originality to say that he would have done Paul & John proud as their understudy. But the early 70's late 60's sound doesn't stop there with borrowings from Pink Floyd, Tommy James and a good hint of 10cc. A wonderful reinventioon of a sound long past in a new generation. APA makes a great argument for many of us from an older generation to pay attention to the pop charts occassionally.
Good
2006-10-11 - This album is simply 'pretty good'. Nothing more, nothing less. It's got some good songs, and it's got some clunkers. I don't think Ashley knows what type of music he really wants to get into yet, and I don't think the band that is backing him up on that album is all that good. Ashley is very talented, and needs to get with a group of younger, edgier musicians, in order to take his music to the next level. Simply making 'ok' music is unacceptable for someone as personable, likeable, and talented as he is.
Standout songs on this album are "Let U Go", "Feel so Alive", "Soundtrack to Your Life" (obviously), and "Crazy Beautiful". Hopefully he ditches his current backup band, and goes with more edge.
