Description of The Best Damn Thing:
The first clue to the sound of Avril Lavigne's third CD, The Best Damn Thing, comes in the form of her kickoff single, "Girlfriend," which is filled with singing, clapping, and cheerleader-style chanting. The song is quite a sonic contrast to her previous disc, Under My Skin, which was considered to be Lavigne's more mature follow-up to her 16 million-selling debut CD, Let Go. Like that debut, The Best Damn Thing will be largely and deeply embraced by teenage girls, and is packed with songs that will create enthusiastic sing-alongs in concert. There are a handful of numbers that will appeal to a wider audience; "Innocence" and disc closer "Keep Holding On" would both fit perfectly in a Gray's Anatomy episode, while the sultry message and solid harmonies in "Hot" will appease ears of many ages. Lavigne's husband, Sum 41 frontman Deryk Whibley makes an appearance as producer and instrumentalist on a handful of tracks; their union, however, seems to have bred more than love. "I Don't Have to Try" and "Everything Back But You" both have a frenetic pace and chorus that is so eerily Sum-like that if they weren't married, a copyright lawsuit might ensue. That aside, the record oscillates between lyrically acerbic fare ("One of Those Girls," "I Can Do Better") and fluffy sugar-pop melodies ("Contagious," "The Best Damn Thing") delivering far more spunk rock than punk rock. --Denise Sheppard

The Best Damn Thing Reviews:
Fun Pop/Rock 4 Star Review
2009-12-19 - As I was going through my CDs the other day, I found this CD which I hadn't listened to in a long time, and I popped this disc into my CD player. I realized that I had forgotten how good this CD was. While it's not "Under My Skin" (in fact, it's quite the opposite mood-wise), it still is a fun record that is a very enjoyable listening experience. While, I'm not that big a fan of lead single "Girlfriend," there are many better songs on the record.

Going through these songs, you realize that the lyrics aren't nearly as emotional or cleaver as songs from her second disc, "Under My Skin," but songs like "I Can Do Better" and "Runaway" are catchy pop-rock tunes and the pretty clever "Everything Back But You" tells a story of Avril getting a postcard from her boyfriend that reads "I wish you were her" (OUCH!)

(Because you wrote I wish you were her/You left out the E/You left without me...)

Hints of "Girlfriend" are sprayed on "I Don't Have to Try" and the album's title track, but they are far superior and much less annoying. The album's true highlights, though, are not the "fun" tracks, but the ballads. Second single "When You're Gone" is very pretty and "Keep Holding On" is very inspirational. But the ballad "Innocence" has to take the cake for best song on the record. It is simply beautiful.

So, before you listen to the haters, preview some of the songs and see if you like them.

TOP 5:
1. Innocence
2. Everything Back But You
3. Runaway
4. When You're Gone
5. Hot

The Best CD! 5 Star Review
2009-12-13 - I originally only bought this for the first song on it (G irlfriend) when I saw it at Target.

But then I listened to some of the other songs on it, not knowing what to expect, and BOOM; instant Avril fan.

Avril's voice explores many themes. From break-ups/jealousy (G irlfriend, I Can Do Better, Everything Back But You) to general sadness (When You're Gone) to being in love (Hot, Contagious) to general happiness (I nnocence).

But either way, she always seems to do it in a way that's enjoyable and keeps me pressing replay again and again.

It's fun but I hope the next one is better.. 3 Star Review
2009-11-30 - ...I like this album a lot-its a lot more fun than Under My Skin which I thought was dreadful-draggy vocals and mediocre. She definitely suffered from the sophomore slump. Avril's best is still her first-Let Go which had hit after hit! Each song was good on its own. BDT is fun, as is Girlfriend, I Can Do Better, Hot. I don't like how she sings When You're Gone-I feel like she sounds a bit sarcastic rather than pasionate. That could just be because of Avril's bratty image. I feel this album is girlie and fun and immature. I rather she stick with this style than go back to Under My Skin boredom style for the next album but who knows. I do feel that she can do better and yet I'm happy with what I have.

Good album 4 Star Review
2009-09-12 - My favorite album because more punky than most Avril albums, although there are still a couple nice ballads. Many songs and guitar rifts definitely influenced by her husband (from Sum 41) and other songs sound like blink 182 (one song's drum beat, guitar and melody sounds just like Blink 182).

Sad but true.... Lavigne sold out. 2 Star Review
2009-08-06 - This won't take me long. Avril Lavigne's two previous albums had been somehow great and catchy in her own terms and somehow (I must repeat that word) I though I was listening to the next Alanis Morrissette but of course... I was wrong. I like Avril Lavigne and I think she is a talented little girl that was on her way to come up with her best album ever. "The best damn thing" carries in its name the first mistake conceived. Lavigne tries to sell the idea that this album is the best she has done and she might've said that when it was to be released but honestly this record is far from being mentioned that way or even to be remembered in a near future. The main problem that I must point out from this album is that Lavigne took "the easy road" to come up with it. As a fan i never understood how she was able to come up with a song like "Take me away" (Under my skin-2004) which I found interesting (musically speaking) or the songs "Nobody's home" (Under my skin-2008) and "Mobile" (Let go-2002) that were pretty great when now on this record we find songs like "Girlfriend" (her worst song so far... bad idea to be chosen as a first single), "The best damn thing" (kind of embarrasing lyrics) and "Everything back but you (mmmm... it seems that Lavigne wants to be Green Day here but instead she sounded like Blink-182).

I just hope that Avril Lavigne finds herself again to come up with an album that reflects her talent.
