Editorial Review:
With her breakthrough 2002 debut, Let Go, Avril Lavigne tried to market herself as the bona fide alternative to tarty teen queens, Britney and Christina. Her guitar-pop hits were irresistibly bratty but the whole "Complicated" teen pose was a little hard to swallow, especially since two songwriters called the Matrix--who had at least twenty years on the Canadian singer--fed her most of the material. Having had the chance to live a little, Lavigne returns to make good on her angsty image with Under My Skin, an album rippling with delightfully dour melodies and heartfelt lyrics about loneliness ("How Does It Feel") and fractured relationships ("Don't Tell Me"). Is it clichéd? Sure. Will it scare off her necktie and t-shirt wearing fans? Possibly. But there's nothing quite as satisfying as watching a teen-pop icon actually reveal her soul. --Jaan Uhelszki

Under My Skin Reviews:
A Slight Sophomore Slump 3 Star Review
2009-11-05 - "Under My Skin" may not be as good as Avril Lavigne's first album overall, but there are some strong pieces here and it is not too big of a drop from her debut. In particular the slower pieces are weak by comparison with her first album, and there isn't as much diversity in sound. This album was released on May 24th, almost exactly two years after her debut, and almost three years prior to her third album.

The album opens with some good tracks. "Take Me Away" has got a good edge to it, though the lyrics are a bit vague. It leads well into "Together" another solid piece, though it isn't quite as good as "Take Me Away" in my opinion. "Don't Tell Me" is the first single from the album, and it has a good strong message for young teen girls about not letting boys pressure them into going farther than they want to. "He Wasn't" is about a failed relationship, which fits right into a good portion of this album. It has a catchy chorus, but it is probably the weakest of the opening four pieces and yet still fairly good. "How Does It Feel" is the first example of the weaker slow songs. It is fairly forgettable overall. "My Happy Ending" is my personal favorite on the album, and a good closer for the first half of the album.

"Nobody's Home" opens the second half of the album, another good piece. The video focuses on the idea of being homeless, but one can also take the lyrics as emotional isolation. "Forgotten" starts a bit slow and soft, but the sound builds through the first chorus. It adds a bit of diversity in sound with its different approach, but it isn't anything special. "Who Knows" is another decent piece, but nothing especially memorable, and a few too many repeats of the word "yeah" making it almost sound like a parity of herself in parts. "Fall to Pieces" is another weaker song on the album, good for one listen, but not something I would listen to over and over again and lyrically it is fairly weak. "Freak Out" is a nice return to some rock. Ultimately it isn't as good as the best tracks on the album, but it benefits from its placement after several weaker pieces. "Slipped Away" is another weak slow song, though perhaps the best of those available, which isn't saying a lot.

This album has several good pieces, but overall it doesn't hang together as well as her first album. It lacks the diversity of the first album, and what little it has tends to be in the weaker efforts on the album. The first half is significantly better than the second half, and even though this is a step backward for her, it is still a bit above average as far as albums go.

Best CD of ALL Time! 5 Star Review
2009-11-04 - Oh my god. This CD is outstanding! My fave album of all time! A perfect display of the iconic Avrils talent. The lyrics on this album are very emotional and introspective! The BEST song from Avril is on this album: My Happy Ending: a song which showcases not only Avrils lyrical ability but also her vocal ability. It is a radio-ready hit which will not dissapoint. A very powerful song indeed which will not grow old. Another standout hit (although, bearing in mind - all the tracks are amazing) is Fall To Pieces. A truely wonderful love song which encompasses great vocal performances from Lavigne. Together is another powerful rock-out song which represnts everything Avril lavigne is stereotyped for portraying.

All up - the best CD I've ever listened to. You can sense the emotion in the tracks and relate and empathize with what she's talking about. All lyrics are beautifully crafted alongside catchy guitar-piano chords to make an introspective AND sing-along album for fans to play on repeat!

great buying experience 5 Star Review

"Under My Skin" Review 4 Star Review
2009-07-24 - Many times, more than not, follow up albums are usually disappointing that at best have one or two good songs--"Under My Skin" is definitely NOT disappointing--just listen to the MP3 samples!

The only reason I did not give this CD five stars is because I don't really care for the song "Freak Out", as it is more of a filler song than anything and it does not fit the theme of this album.

Overall, I would recommend this CD and her other one "Let Go" for A.L. fans, but I would not recommend her latest release, "The Best Damn Thing."
