Editorial Review:
Barenaked Ladies celebrate the holiday season with their ninth major release, Barenaked For The Holidays. This release features many holiday favorites, including "Do They Know It's Christ- mas"(written by Bob Geldof )and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," performed with Sarah McLachlan, and seven original tracks including BNL’s new holiday single "Elf ’s Lament," featuring Michael Bublé. Ed Robertson and Steven Page"s distinctive vocals give a fresh sound to traditional holiday classics. Barenaked For The Holidays is sure to be a holiday favorite that is fun, witty and dynamic.

Description of Barenaked for the Holidays:
Few bands are better suited than the Barenaked Ladies to take obnoxious old Christmas jingles to an entirely new level of obnoxiousness. The Canadian pop group does a smack-up job on this generous collection, where they tackle children's relics like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," curious seasonal fare such as Band-Aid's Ethiopian charity single "Do They Know It's Christmas," and a handful of tongue-in-cheek originals that share the bookish humor of the band's hits like "One Week" and "Brian Wilson." Even the inclusion of three Hannukah songs doesn't raise the bar for reverence. The disc also includes collaborations with Sarah McLachlan and Michael Buble. --Aidin Vaziri

Barenaked for the Holidays Reviews:
Love this holiday music 5 Star Review
2009-12-05 - This CD contains something for all ages...my kids love it as much as I do. The music is Barenaked Ladies style...new twists to old music mixed in with great originals. Fun holiday CD...we listen every year on the day after T-giving to New Years!

Buy CD don't download 4 Star Review
2009-12-03 - I bought the download of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and as much as I love the arrangement there is something seriously sonically wrong with this file.It is distorted and boomy. The bass fades in and out. I have to assume the CD version isn't messed up like this. I've bought lots of MP3s from Amazon (ok, many were free downloads, lol) and I've never experienced this before.Any ideas?
BNL= great/this download=:P

BNL "Holiday" is fun, quirky, and nostalgic 4 Star Review
2009-11-18 - I love this "Holiday" CD. Yes the short interlude pieces are a bit quirky, but they add to the charm of this wonderful release. The real treasures on this CD are the seven BNL originals which are beautifully performed and have a fun, nostalgic, and at times sentimental feel to them plus the more traditional covers like "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and "Do They Know It's Christmas?"

Ed Roberston takes the lead on several originals including "Snowman", a gentle, touching number sung from a snowman's point of view questioning his place in the greater scheme. He also gives us "Footprints" a winter love song about reconciliation and the bouncy "Green Christmas" about someone who just can't get into the Christmas spirit even though all the elements seem to be in place. ("Green Christmas" may be familiar as it was featured on soundtrack for the Jim Carrey film "The Grinch".) The last Robertson number is "Elf's Lament" which finds vocalist Michael Buble joining BNL in a number where Santa's elves bemoan their working conditions, sounding like they're ready to unionize.

Steve Page takes the lead on three numbers celebrating Hannukah including his own lovely "Hanukkah Blessing" as well as the more traditional numbers "Hanukkah, Oh Hanukkah" and the lively "Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel". Page also sings "Jingle Bells" which starts out slow and quiet, like Dave Brubeck's "Farewell Jungle Bells", but then launches into a rip-roaring rendition.

Kevin Hearn provides the fun "Christmastime (Oh Yeah)", yet another nostalgic looks at the simple joys of Christmas and Jim Creegan recounts how that camera will always intrude on your holiday moments, good and bad, capturing them forever in "Christmas Pics".

Other highlights include the beautiful "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings" medley in which BNL is joined by Sarah McLaclan who adds her sweet soprano to one the CDs best and, clearly, most traditional tracks. "Do They Know It's Christmas?" is a song which, for me, wore out its welcome the year it was released, so I was surprised to find myself hummming along to BNL's version: I prefer it to the '84 "Band Aid" original. The instrumental "Carol of the Bells" has a nice retro feel to it and sounds like it might have been right at home on one of Rhino's "Ultra Lounge Christmas Cocktail" CDs.

The remaining half-dozen or so tracks are generally short (a minute or so each) and were clearly thrown in to lighten things up and provide a smile along the way. Basically a fun alternative to the usual musical fare of the season.

great music 5 Star Review
2009-08-20 - I love the music on the CD, and it plays well. I just wish the original CD cover had been included.

Holiday Cheer! 5 Star Review
2009-06-30 - I'll admit to being one of those sappy, sentimentalists who just loves the holidays. Despite this, I believe the music on this album by BNL is perhaps one of the most listenable collections of holiday music ever made, that you can actually listen to anytime of year. It's just plain unadulterated fun. When the guys actually get serious and do a "traditional" version (Barenaked style) of one of the standards, it's given the right amount of respect to avoid sounding like a spoof. If you're having a holiday party, you can't go wrong with this album playing in the background. But why would you want to do that? Turn it up and have some seriously barenaked holidays!
