Description of Paul's Boutique:
After the out-of-nowhere success of Licensed to Ill, the Beasties had to prove they were more than one-album wonders, and they hit it out of the park with this follow-up. The Boys' lyrics are a hysterical deluge of cultural allusion (Ponce De Leon, Sadaharu Oh, and Love Connection's Chuck Woolery all get name-dropped), compressed wordplay, and adenoidal snottiness, but the real stars are the Dust Brothers, whose production is a hip-hop landmark. Their music tracks sound like the history of rock and funk radio boiled down to a pure concentrate--monster jams built out of thousands of unexpected samples (Johnny Cash! The Sweet!). It's a killer party album, kinetic and dense, and it never slows down. --Douglas Wolk

Paul's Boutique Reviews:
Old-school classics 5 Star Review
2009-10-21 - I'm just now listening to the BB's older albums, and I think this one is better than their first. The use of sampling and lyrics makes for an upbeat, sometimes humorous ride, and the actual feel of the album is better than most hip-hop and "rap" I hear today. They were pretty unusual at this time, before white rappers were more mainstream, and had a lot of competition but really succeeded with this album and the follow-ups. Many fans consider Paul's Botique to be their best album, and it kinda reminds me of "Blood Sugar Sex Magik", a best-selling album that all real fans of RHCP will be familiar with.

A genre-busting masterpiece. It doesn't get any better than this. 5 Star Review
2009-05-16 - You can't have a "10 Greatest Rap Albums Of All-Time" list without including this one. It's one of those albums that you hated the first time you heard it, but as you listened to it more and more, it began to grow on you, eventually-becoming an addiction you can't shake. I can't go far from home without bringing a copy of this CD. I even go through periods where I'm completely-addicted, listening to it every day, for weeks on end.
Co written/produced by The Beastie Boys and The Dust Brothers, "Paul's Boutique" (Ask For Janice) has more in common with classic rock/pop albums like "Abbey Road" or "Pet Sounds" than your typical rap album. It's a lot like a hip-hop soundscape or a piece of fine art. The Beasties and the Dust Brothers put together a mammoth-sized collection of samples culled from a veritable mountain of funk, soul, and even classic rock and pop references, and used these different musical colors, mixing layer upon layer together with some of the greatest rhymes ever heard in rap ("I'm throwin' up signs like Dolomite!"), to paint a hip-hop masterpiece of infinite proportions. "Paul's Boutique" is one of the last great rap albums (like Public Enemy's "It Takes A Nation Of Millions...") recorded before the rules changed regarding sampling. Back then, rap artists had free-reign to sample whatever music they wanted, and the Beastie Boys left no musical stone unturned. This album is LOADED with samples from all sorts of classic artists such as the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, and other classic rock/pop bands, along with funk and soul artists like James Brown and the Meters (WAY-too much to really go into any kind of detail). Trust me, if you are one of the few people left on earth who hasn't experienced the genius of this classic album, then do yourself a huge favor and buy the CD. Take it home, do whatever you have to do to "relax", play this CD through a fine-sounding home stereo, and sit back and close your eyes. I assure you, you won't be disappointed. This one's a keeper.
(By the way, if this CD seems to be a bit on the quiet side, that's because it was mastered long before the days of "brickwalling" (Nowadays, engineers use mastering compression to push the volume to the limit, at the expense of dynamics). Back in '89, dynamics were still considered an important thing in music, so if it's not loud enough, then turn it up)

Top Notch 5 Star Review
2008-12-14 - Bury me with this one: it's the one I want to take with me into the Afterlife. My all time favorite. It doesn't get any better.

ballantine quarts with a puzzoo on the cap 5 Star Review
2008-06-09 - Respect to the Beasties for the courage to grow up. That said, however, this, their second album, was their creative zenith, at least as a straight hip hop crew. I'm obssessed with the song "high plains drifter" and am going to, at some point in my life, try everything mentioned in the song. I've already spent a night at the motel 6.....

Everything You've Heard Is True 5 Star Review
2008-02-07 - It's all been said before so I'll keep this short. But if you are interested and ANY kind of Hip Hop or modern funk/rock you need to own this album. No only is it an awesome album in and of itself, but it has grown into a classic of cultural proportions. It was a major influence on bands like Sublime and 311 who have in turn influenced countless bands themselves. It also proved that the B-Boys were more than just a white boy rap gimmick. Anyway, do yourself a favor and get in on modern music history.
