Editorial Review:
The Mix-Up is Beastie Boys' first-ever full album of all-new instrumental material. The follow-up to 2004's To The 5 Boroughs, The Mix-Up features Diamond, Horovitz and Yauch back on drums, guitar and bass, with able assistance from Keyboard Money Mark and percussionist Alfredo Ortiz, on 12 brand new wordless, sample-less, scratchless originals. Sure to please fans of the instrumental cuts from Check Your Head and Ill Communication and the cult hit compilation album made up largely of those tracks, The In Sound From Way Out!, The Mix-Up finds NYC's favorite sons drawing on one of their arsenal's primary strengths and pushing it into bold new directions.

Description of The Mix-Up:
Having long since shed their image as hip-hop's clown princes, the Beastie Boys now bring what feels like their emeritus recording, a celebratory instrumental memoir of all of the influences (except punk) that brought them to their secure place among hip-hop's fickle elite. The party opens with the aptly titled "B for My Name," its plodding bounce staking claim to the mid-tempo path the album treads almost throughout. "14th St. Break" picks up the pace, especially in the auxiliary percussion breakdown, complete with rally whistle. Then, beginning with "Suco de Tangerina," the album drops into a deep groove cut from dub- and dancehall-tinged ostinati that carry through a full third of its tracks. Among these, "The Gala Event" suffers from a lack of developmental motion that characterizes many of these tracks, but highlights still abound. "Off the Grid," for example, departs from the otherwise unbreakable chill and rips the proceedings wide open, blooming again and again in a series of pulsing riffs that celebrate the very institution of the instrumental groove. More than 20 years since Licensed to Ill took a long, irreverent piss into the mainstream, it seems you can still fight for your right to party. --Jason Kirk
The Mix-Up Reviews:
EXCELLENT
2009-11-24 - Who knew when we hear Licence To Ill in 1986 that the Beastie Boys, twenty years on, would be one of the hippist bands on planet Earth. It first became evident to me on 1998s Hello Nasty, but even then, I had no idea I was listening to the best jazz trio just right of Medeski, Martian and Wood.
Wonder the difference? Well, I did too, but on listening more to both, I found MMW put funk into their jazz, where the Beastie Boys do the reverse. And on Mix Up, the boys have a pretty diverse pallate, mixing the swing and funk of Jimmy Smith with the dissonence, at times, of Larry Young. They use all kinds of fuzz and treaments on the organ.
But this also sound modern, mixing this 1950s and 60s soul/jazz trio impulse with beats informed by Hip Hop. It may not be totally origional, but given the current state of music, the Beastie Boys have it going on more than 99% of the big names.
Excellent.
Love it...
2009-11-22 - All these reviews comparing Stanton Moore and the like don't really listen to what this CD has to offer. Moore is a drummer who's whole CD has the drum as the lead sound....how can you compare it to this? It's like apples and oranges. The Mix-Up is smoother and highlights other instruments throughout.
I think it's a great way for the BB's to put out there what they are really about. It speaks to me; a Chicago born - blues fed - grew up in the 80's and have watched and enjoyed the Beastie Boys through all their metemorphises girl. I love me some bass guitar led, funky, close your eyes and feel it creep all up in ya music.
If you can appreciate instrumental grooves, blues, punk, rock, or even a 70's vibe.....throw this one in your collection. Right up there with Booker T...no lie. Different, but both great in their own way.
ENJOY!
Beastie boys, what!
2009-11-22 - I'm sick of all the bad reviews here I'm mean literally. Because if you only enjoy beats, then you don't know what music is. If you love the Beastie boys, then there's no reason not to like this great instrumental album unless you want to hear them rap which isn't the case here. Let's see, Paul's boutique, Rap, Punk, Funk, and Rock mostly samples from the genres but beastie boys put their work in it too. Now Check your head, Rap, Punk, Jazz, Funk, and Alternative. ill Communication was more straight up hip hop but you still hear the instruments man, especially in a song like Sabotage, duh! it's punk rock half rap. Hello nasty, not as good but a bit similar to Check your head only it experiments a bit more in some songs. To The 5 boroughs, just hip hop and their least good album old school beats sounded "cooler". So there you go, what's the difference here? really no beats or vocals. That's it. So hip hop only fans you gotta be kidding me. No, I get it. It's not like I'm saying all their previous albums sounded like The Mix up because they had hip hop only stuff, then they mixed up. But you know they've always had a little something more than hip hop going on. And that was after their days as a hardcore punk band. And hell, I'm not into funk or soul but some bands rock em good. You gotta appreciate this Beastie record It just shows you how talented they are, they have always prove that. And even tough I hate the grammy's, they didn't win for nothing. Just like Mike D said that this was a post punk instrumental album. And not everyone's gonna enjoy it but you can never say they aren't talented alright guys. Yeah the beastie hip hop rules same with their other influences. Now I'm gonna rock to the early blast beasts of riot fight!
great release of new material by an established artist
2009-10-21 - This CD is break beats and sampling riffs with free form jazz and some old skool DJ skills. Grrrrrrrrreat.
beastie boy b side beat
2009-01-31 - i heard the beastie had a new album all insrumetal out, i picked it up being a life long fan.i wasn t expecting herbie hancock or chic cora andthe electric band but some growth. at least i was expecting some old style interludes.this album failed to deliver kind of bland with moments of potential, after the 1st couple of lisens i wore out the excitment of having new b boy material. it was apparent that the beastie didnt have that ex-zoo-berence they had on previous albums of instrumental compositions.if your a loyal beastie fan pick it up but dont expect much but a couple more tracks to add to your collection.if your not then spend your money on another beastie album .
i only give it 3 cause i cant put shame in their game
