Editorial Review:
Evaluating more than 1,400 books about, by, and featuring the Fab Four, this comprehensive listing catalogs the entire history of Beatles books and profiles the author and publisher of each. Organized alphabetically by title, this guide is the ultimate resource for collectors, featuring reproductions of the band’s music in print and even revealing which publishers may be interested in fans’ ideas for new Beatles books. BEATLE Books: From Genesis to Revolution Reviews: not really ABOUT the books 2009-07-15 - When I preordered this book I had hoped it would essentially update Bill Harry's Beatles Bibliography 'Paperback Writers', part of a Virgin Books Beatles reference series from 1984, which though good for it's time is now 25 years out of date.
Harry's book describes each listings' content and rates them on a one to five star scale (though I don't remember seeing any one star reviews) This was of some help in directing the reader toward the more essential or interesting books.
Though this book shows the ever blossoming of Beatles in print, it is little more than a listing of books published (in English) from 1963 to 2008 relating to the Beatles. It may be of value to the completist with some knowledge of the books in searching for, or investigating items they may have missed, but
the average Beatlefan looking to build a basic Beatles library will find this book of limited value.
Yes it is a very extensive, current (for now) bibliography but it's not ABOUT the books.
Disappointing, even as a reference work. 2009-06-14 - Much like his 2008 "Beatles Encyclopedia," Sandercombe's bibliography lives up to its title, offering bare bones information (title, author, publisher, format and year published, the presence of illustrations or subsquent editions), but little more. The lack of any comments regarding a book's history, its usefulness as a reference work, or any interesting trivia, makes for a very dry read.
Chapters in the book group this information year-by-year, by author, and by title, with an additional section on titles devoted to individual members. Black and white illustrations of book covers are scattered throughout, but these are neither complete or especially diverse, offering no cover variations, or book ephemera.
This is the kind of title you're likely to see a public library purchasing, but as a durable reference work for the Beatle book freak, I can't recommend it.
