Words Are Inadequate
2005-10-20 - What do you say about one of the greatest albums of the rock era? Do you say that at the end of their career as a group that these four individuals, talented individually and phenomenally gifted as a group, came together to create something magical? Sure, why not. But even that would be an understatement. When describing a performance this good, you get to the point where words alone fail. Artistry with words fails to describe the artistry with music, which is as it should be.

"Abbey Road" was an interesting combination of music. Much of the album is a collection of songs that was and is the envy of lesser talents, and remains a standard of excellence for others against which to compare. Part of the album was a grouping of songs that transitioned from one to the next seamlessly and wonderfully, beginning with "You Never Gave Me Your Money" and ending with "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window." The Moody Blues had performed similar transitions in "Days of Future Passed," and overlapping of songs was a tradition for them on all their albums, but to do rock transitions from one song to the next was novel.

What songs! Songs from hard rock (well, it was hard then) such as "Come Together" and "I Want You," mellow ballads such as "Something" and "Here Comes the Sun," a bizarre synthesized "Because," and quirky novelty songs like "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" and "Octopus's Garden." It was as though the group knew they were nearing the end and was putting out pieces of this and that with exquisite finesse and skill. The breadth of music on this one album is incredible, and shows why The Beatles remain (in my humble opinion) the greatest rock group of all time to this day. They gave so much in creating rock music as we know it, and this album was their last brilliant hurrah.

There's nothing more to say. This album is a must-have for any Beatles fan, for any aficionado of 60s music, and for anyone that appreciates the talent required to create the range of songs on this CD. Throw yourself back more than 30 years and imagine what it was like to have lived in the time when the lads were still young, and music like this was genius.


THE BEATLES' LAST HURRAH...
2005-08-04 - "Abbey Road" was the last album The Beatles recorded as a group, though the "Let It Be" album was the last recording they released. This was certainly the end of an era, and none of The Beatles would go on to match the success that they had enjoyed collectively as one of the most imaginative, talented, and successful groups ever to grace the music industry.

"Abbey Road" is an excellent recording. Interestingly enough, one of the best tracks on the album, and certainly his best effort, is George Harrison's "Something". This album has many good songs from which the listener may choose, however. and the tracks on it are as diverse in feeling as The Beatles themselves. The reality is that this album remains best known for the fact that this would be the last recording by The Beatles. As such, no music collection should be without it.
