Description of Past Masters, Vols. 1 & 2:
Although they were probably the band that most transformed rock from a singles medium to an album-oriented form, the Beatles also released many singles and EP tracks that never made it onto albums. In the U.S., Capitol turned the group's early LPs, through Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, into compilations, more or less, throwing the hit singles onto the vinyl to augment the album tracks. When the label later released the U.K. albums on CD, it posed a problem: What to do with the non-LP singles? Past Masters, Volume 1 compiles 18 of those singles, including some of their best-known tracks, running from "Love Me Do," "She Love You," "I Want to Hold Your Hand," and "This Boy" to "I Feel Fine" and Paul's homage to Little Richard, "I'm Down." Essential stuff. --Bill Holdship

Past Masters, Vols. 1 & 2 Reviews:
past masters indeed 5 Star Review
2009-11-21 - Since Past Masters, in the remastered format, contains both albums, it encapsules a complete musical history of The Beatles. From Love Me Do to Let it Be, this package give a great sampling of their growth and developement as musicians and songwriters. Take into account the remastering of these songs into bright, vivid episodes, and this is a must for Beatle fans. For those who were born too late to be there when it happened, listen carefully to these guys, who were not the greatest technical musicians individually, but together were an unbeatable team. These were the masters of pop music in the sixties, and the term Past Masters could be used with a dual meaning here and and also refer to them as well as their music.

Terrific! 5 Star Review
2009-11-13 - A well-produced and fresh-sounding compilation of alternate versions, B-sides, and comparatively obscure tracks, Past Masters might only be appreciated fully by a die-hard Beatles fan. But for those of us who ARE this collection is a rare treat both as music and as memorabilia. While the thoroughly impressive job done in remastering the recordings is icing on the cake it's still well worth the investment in upgrading to a new copy for anyone who's remotely interested in high-quality audio.
Casual fans might safely give Past Masters a miss and folks who aren't in the habit of spending time fine-tuning the EQ on their stereo system for that 'perfect sound' may not appreciate the nuances of the remastered tracks, but Past Masters is a must-have for any serious Beatles fan with an ear for good sound!

remastered ???? 3 Star Review
2009-11-12 - This a review of the REMASTERED Past Masters. Having listened to both CDs on headphones I came to the conclusion that the first 1987 release actually sounded a little bit better. But the THE REMASTERED CD did sound a tad better on "day tripper."

beatles masters 5 Star Review
2009-11-09 - Great Buy! Not a significant change from '87 to today but still great packaging & detail.....

Buy it - Paul needs the money.... 5 Star Review
2009-11-01 - Now that I have your attention, let me tell you the TRUTH about most music reviews. You really don't need them anymore! If you grew up in the bad old days of music collecting like I did, music was on vinyl lp's. They were sealed. The only way you could tell if they were good or bad was to buy them. If they were bad, you were out of luck. If they were good, then you would buy the next release from the same performers. The Beatles were a rare group - they NEVER disappointed anyone...that's how they built their reputation for being the best. Now, since we have the internet, we can hear almost every song on every record before buying...so if anyone doesn't like what they get, it's their own fault! This "Past Masters" cd is the best version in stereo that you can get at this time (although I still think the early beatles sounded best in mono). I don't think the sound engineers can do much more for these songs than they already have (Unless they can get George Martin & the other beatles back from the grave so they can re-record everything in a state of the art facility, but that's pretty unlikely!). By the way, Paul & co. always appreciates a new sale...he'll be happy, his pets will thank you, & so will Michael Jackson's family, ha,ha....
