Description of Rubber Soul:
Rank 'em how you like, Rubber Soul is an undeniable pivot point in the Fab Four's varied discography no matter where, or how, you first heard it. The album was softened up in its original 12-song American edition to jibe with the Dylan/Byrds folk-rock sound, as well as squeeze money from the Parlophone catalog. The 14-song U.K. edition--the version now available on compact disc--is a different, more dynamic, and ultimately more accomplished achievement. So many classics: "Drive My Car" and "Nowhere Man" (both omitted from the U.S. edition) merge the early combustible Beatifics to a burgeoning studio consciousness; "The Word" can be read as a pre-psych warning shot; the sitar-laden "Norwegian Wood" and the evocative "Girl" (the latter written on the last night of the sessions) stand as turning points in John Lennon's oeuvre. George finally emerges too, with the McGuinn-ish "If I Needed Someone." --Don Harrison
Rubber Soul Reviews:
Classic
2009-12-04 - Those new to the Beatles will hear from older fans that Rubber Soul is where the fab four became a much more mature band.
This is true. Though the Beatles were evolving with each album--"I'm A Loser" was at the end of 1964 and leaps ahead of anything that would have been recorded early that year--Rubber Soul was the first entire album that let you know something different was going on.
"Norigian Wood" was about an affair John had, and it was known to all he was married. "The Word" was a love anthem a full two years before hippies became part of the culture. "Think For Yourself" and "Girl" delt with the adult complexities of love in a way only Dylan had before.
"Girl" in particular is John saying the girl is driving him crazy, but he does not want to give up the sex. Nobody had even implied this before--and this bold stroke is why the Beatles were the Beatles. They just did what no one else would.
All fab four were listening to Bob Dylan. Rubber Soul was them taking this depth in writting and applying it to their sound. The Beatles did what they always did--took influences and turned them into something new. Rubber Soul is them stepping this process up. After this came Revolver, and they progreseed in quantum leaps, not giant steps, from here out.
This album will work better in mono. Out of all the albums, Rubber Soul is probably the most clean and least complicated with its use of accustic guitars.
Still, I find that the Stereo American version of the album, which does not have "Drive My Car," "Nowhere Man," "What Goes On" or "If I needed Someone" is actually a more focused album--with all the rock stuff sliced, Rubber Soul becomes a tight folk masterpeiece. In America, the deleted tracks were on Yesterday And Today.
But don't fret. Easy answer. Get both versions of Rubber Soul.
