Description of The Beatles Mono Box Set:
The Beatles Mono Box Set was compiled as a special interest package for the hard-core fan. It presents the first ten albums in re-mastered mono (the final 3 albums made their debuts in stereo only), and a double album of singles and EPs, called "Mono Masters". At the time of writing, the mono albums are not available individually. Why would anyone want a newly minted mono collection? The final mono songs were sometimes different. Stereo mixes were usually done days, if not weeks after the original mono mix, and could include different takes when the engineers made the overdubs. Stereo mixes, particularly for the first five albums, did not include as much critical listening from George Martin, and almost none from the Fab' Four. Also, stereo in early 60's England was not broadcast over the air, and the format was largely the preserve of the hi-fi snob. For more than half The Beatles recorded repertoire, the most affordable "weapon of choice" for the twisting, shouting teenage market was the mono mix. Ironically - this box set is the best The Beatles have ever sounded. Like the stereo sibling these are re-mastered, not re-mixed, but unlike the stereo, they have not been clipped or limited to push levels closer to current music ingested through our MP3 players. These albums are cleaner than ever before and compared to the 1980s CD editions you're taken aback by how much dynamic range is on those original tapes. Nothing in this box sounds like a 45 year old recording. Each disc is presented as if it were a miniature "33", replete with plastic anti-scratch sleeve, inner paper sleeve, original album cover, inserts and all original text rendered frustratingly small for anyone old enough to have bought the LPs the first time around. -- Hugo Munday
The Beatles Mono Box Set Reviews:
The Beatles in Mono - What a joy!
2009-12-22 - Here's the irony: Stereo was conceived to simulate a live performance, but it is The Beatles in Mono mix of the respective albums that deliver the closest approximation to a live performance. I own the re mastered stereo mixes and the re mastered mono mixes as well as the 1987 CDs. Listening to The Beatles in Mono is startling. The mono mixes ultimately and substantially deliver a dynamic Beatles performance. Beyond the technical aspects already discussed, it is the listening experience, with a decently good compact disc system, that makes it easily discernable that the mono mixes are superior to the stereo mixes of the ten original mono albums. The Beatles in Mono - What a joy!
Don't be "penny wise and pound foolish". Spend your money wisely. At Amazon's price of $199.95, buy "The Beatles in Mono" and supplement it with "Abbey Road" and "Let It Be - Naked" in stereo. You will hear The Beatles as you have never heard them, but as they meant for you to hear them.
Sounds wonderful
2009-12-22 - First...Pepper, Pepper, Pepper!!! I hadn't heard it in mono since my old LPs went to heaven. It is so much better in mono. It sounds as I remember it. Much more powerful than the stereo version.
Couple of little things that I haven't seen anybody mention..in 'A Day in the Life' after Paul's 'woke up, got out of bed' bit and before John reads the news again, oh boy, there's a orchestral section with John singing on top. I remember listening to this as a kid and it was quite majestic sounding on LP. Then the 80s stereo CD was issued, and John's ethereal 'aah' over the orchestra was now spun around the speakers, and was buried just enough to lose the glorious effect. Also in 'Lucy in the Sky' there's some whatsit (phased guitar perhaps) that tracks the melody along with John's singing. In mono it blends into one instrument. In stereo instead of the blend you get to hear the ingredients, which is not nearly so interesting.
One other little thing that I haven't seen elsewhere.....on 'Slow Down' there's a piano that plays a very simple double of the bass line. In mono it's there if you listen for it, but it's not very prominent and is intended to simply bolster the bass riff, not stand out. In the old stereo CD issues, this dopey piano part stood out like a sore thumb. Drove me crazy every time I heard it.
Anyone looking for advice as to whether to buy, I'd recommend James Perlman's review. For me the greatest improvement is having everything from Beatles For Sale - Sgt Pepper in mono. They just sound better.
And again. Pepper, Pepper Pepper!!!
Beatles Lovers
2009-12-21 - If you are a true Beatles lover, then this set is for you. I tried to determine whether to get the Stereo or Mono version of the remastered albums, and in the end, got both. I was going to get just the Stereo version, and I am so happy I got the Mono as well.
I know the music very well, and the sound is incredibly true. I am hearing things on the Mono CD's that I have never heard before.
Although I like the stereo version, it is sometimes jarring to hear a lot of separation in the music.
I find that I am returning more to the Mono CD's than the Stereo version.
Hope this helps!
Why not remixed?
2009-12-20 - Having read many of the reviews on this site, I can't help being amused by the almost religious reverence in which the Beatles catalog is regarded. What with the passionate discussions concerning the minutiae between the mono and stereo releases, people may as well be discussing different versions of the Bible.
I freely admit to being a Beatles fan, but I feel that most of the fervor over these new releases is being generated by nostalgia, not artistic appreciation. Yes, the Beatles were the greatest rock and roll group of the past century (probably of all time), but let's face it... not everything they put out was wonderful. For instance, Please, Please Me is an enjoyable collection of early Beatles originals and covers... but it's hardly indispensible. The same came be said for the following album. So for myself, debating the relative merits of the mono versions of these two albums over their respective stereo versions is a pointless exercise.
Of far greater importance are the iconic albums starting with A Hard Days Night, and excepting Beatles For Sale and Magical Mystery Tour (artistic low points both), includes everything in this set up to the White album. As for the mono/stereo debate, my opinion is that Rubber Soul and Revolver both sound better in mono due to the poor left/right stereo mixes of those albums. A Hard Days Night and the White album sound far better in stereo. Other albums like Sgt Peppers have their interesting moments (She's Leaving Home), but overall sound better in stereo.
My feeling is that this whole mono versus stereo debate would be rendered moot with new, improved stereo mixes of all the albums (but particularly Help, Rubber Soul, and Revolver). I think EMI missed a golden opportunity to give us definitive versions of these albums. What a shame...
Get the mono box plus individual stereo
2009-12-19 - I've got the mono box. Listening over speakers (not headphones), it's truly great! Clean, wholesome, rich sound - - like never before. I'd say "Yesterday" for me is the standout, but all of them are great in mono. Ringo's "Don't Pass Me By" speeded up is the only slip up. Just play it on the speakers...
But listening to the stereo versions is also good (even on headphones), and it's a fun and learning experience comparing the two. So to me it's obvious - - get the Mono box and add your personal favorites of the individual stereo versions (I don't recommend getting the stereo box). At least get the stereo Abbey Road and Let it Be to complete your collection (I did).
