The Beatles Stereo Box Set Reviews: Finally, the thing a beatle's fan was waiting for!!! 2009-12-16 - Definitely, this box set has come to fulfill all my expectations about The Beatles'Discography. Pictures and artwork included in each LP is simply wonderful. Even the CDs are labeled like the original vinyls releases. Listening to them, I've been able to find out new sounds, new instruments that I hadn't found out before, through all these years enjoying Beatles' songs.

Beatles fans save your money 2009-12-14 - This is insanity. I'm a professional musician and lifelong Beatles fan who actually sprang for both the stereo and mono boxes last month, and I am getting rid of both. These new remasters offer only a subtle improvement over the CDs that were issued 20 years ago. The mono mixes are muddy and it's impossible to discern the individual parts as well as you can in the stereo mixes--many of them literally disappear in the monos. On the other hand, the stereo mixes are terrible. As admitted by The Beatles, George Martin, and Geoff Emerick (the engineer for most of the tracks), they were created as mere afterthoughts to the mono mixes. Many of them have vocals panned all the way to one side and instrumental tracks panned all the way to the other, as well as embarrassing mistakes (listen to the beginning of Eleanor Rigby for an example) that the reissue engineers weren't allowed to correct because they were only allowed to work on the stereo master tracks as opposed to the original multitrack tapes.
What would have the alternative that Apple Corps and EMI could have provided to these remasters? Going in and doing a proper remix of the catalogue, which would have fixed the bad stereo mixes, rendered the mono mixes irrelevant, improved the sound quality, and allowed the engineers to repair the mistakes in the originals. To get a sense of what would have possible with a remix, I recommend listening to the 1999 "Yellow Submarine" album, which is beautifully remixed (and incidentally, includes a repaired version of Eleanor Rigby), or the later "Love" album, which is also beautifully remixed (and mashed-up, unfortunately).
Long story short, Apple Corps and EMI are taking the cynical approach of milking the catalogue for all it's worth, and Beatles fans for all they're worth, by reissuing separate remasters of the outdated mono mixes and inept original stereo mixes in overpriced CD box sets and a ridiculously overpriced apple USB, in order to leave to the future the inevitable reissue of a properly remixed catalogue. If you already own this music, I'd save your money until then.
Here comes the sun 2009-12-13 - At last! The boxed set was worth the wait.
Anyone who was there when the Beatles turned the music scene onto its head must have this set.
