    Voyage...... 2 Star Review
2008-11-25 - I bought this on VHS, watched it on my TV, and thought it was just a little dull. It's not a terrible movie but just too "on the kid-side" for entertainment.

This was terrible... don't waste your time or money... 1 Star Review
2004-09-21 - I was very disappointed with this movie. Because of the good reviews, I had expected a great movie and alhtough the storyline is intriguing, it looks low budget and unreal. I usually don't review anything but my disapointment with this one encouraged me to do so. If this movie is from a book then you'd probably be better off reading it and using your imagination. The special effects remind me of the Sinbad movie's. For a movie that was made decades ago, this is acceptable but by today's standards it's horrible.

Voyage of the Unicorn 5 Star Review
2003-07-20 - This is probably one of the best book-turned-movies in existence!

The story is of the Aislings...

Alan is a professor at the local university, who teaches a mythology class. He teaches the class about 'Credendo Vides'--By believing one sees--much to the dislike of the soon-to-be Dean.

Miranda is a high-schooler who gave up on the world and the human race intirely when her mother died.

Cassie is the youngest, a ten-year-old girl who intently studies her recently deceased mother's majikal drawings.

One night a group of trolls attack them, and then a dwarf and an elf--Malachai and Sebastian--come to rescue them by taking them on board the majikal ship the Unicorn.

When they arrive on Faerie Isle--Avalon--the King and Queen--Oberon and Titania--greet them and tell them of a prophecy that stated 'a man of wisdom and two maidens fair' should find the lost SkyDragon that protected the land of imagination. So the crew of the Unicorn goes on a quest, finding other majikal creatures that also become crewmembers.

The end of the film ends in a battle in which the crew of the Unicorn battle with the King of Troll Island. After they defeat the King Skultom and return the SkyDragon to the skies, they all wake up. But was it really a dream?

A wonderful movie, it doesn't deserve to be canceled. TRY TO BUY THIS USED! If you liked this read the book! -- The Voyage of the Basset --

Or the series! -- 1)Islands in the Sky 2)The Raven Queen 3)Journey to Otherwhere 4)Thor's Hammer 5)Fire Bird --

Wonderful movie, but the VHS screws viewing experiance! 3 Star Review
2002-08-12 - I have to say, right away, that I fell in love with James Christnensen's book before I even heard about the movie. I was nine when I got the book, and even now, five years later, I am still entralled by it. If you liked this film, the book you will adore. It's the most beautiful (the gorgeous illustrations) and lyrical (the story is just the right level: easy enough for young readers, touching and with deep messages for older readers) thing I have ever set eyes upon.
The full-length version, that usually takes four hours, is great. (Although there were many things that were cut out of the TV broadcast, such as the scene of the Sphinx in the ship.) The trolls were my least favorite part of the movie, because in the book they were just stupid creatures who didn't really have a reason to go after the Aislings, it was just their nature. The really long and annoying stomping and chanting by the lava stream-thing is totally unneccessary and boring. Another thing I didn't like were Oberon's and Titania's costumes and make-up. Oberan looks like a dog, and Titania looks like a mermaid/vampire. I liked the way they were depicted in the book: more tradiional, and human-like enough they didn't seem kooky. Other than those aspects, this did justice to the book. I adored (read: I think Sebastion is hot) the love subplot with Miranda and Sebastion, it was so awesome to see her just run up to him and kiss him. I wish we could have seen all the creatures that worked on the ship in the book, but this is a TV movie, they already did a good job on design anyway. This film has GREAT acting, even the actors in all the make-up and elaborate costumes. The two Aisling daughters (Chantal Conlin as Cassie and Heather McEwan as Miranda) were terrific, and totally believable. It's a shame all Chantal can get is cereal commercials, she's a wonderful actress. The score and songs are beautiful, especially the dream sequence where Miranda calls the mermaid and when the girls are trying to tame the unicorn. Sadly, the way the film was recorded on the VHS, the music sounds [bad] and cheap, and the whole scene with the unicorn is scrapped.
That's why I only gave this 3 stars. Great scenes with gorgeous costumes and characters, music and acting, were cut so they could squeeze it onto one cassete. It's horrible, because two of the coolest characters, the Sphinx and the Dryad, don't get hardly any time on the video, while they had much bigger and way better parts on the original version. The part where Miranda meets the Dryad is totally awesome, but all you get is the Dryad pointing to the Faerie Court and having a dorky accent. Urgh. If you see it on TV, you get a lot more rewarding experiance, because:
    1. More Sebastion hotness.
    2. Better character development.
    3. More beautiful music.
    4. Great production design that the picture quality ruins in the video.
    5. Less loose ends and "Huh? What happened?" moments.

All in all, a great movie, but you'd get better sound and picture quality, not to mention a better film and [money] saved, if you just taped it off the Hallmark Channel and fast-forwarded through the commercials.
Oh, and get the book, too. It's work it.

My Kind of Movie 5 Star Review
2002-07-15 - I'm the kind of girl who like fantasy movies(The Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, Legend, etc.) , books (Lord of the Rings, The Ancient One, etc.), and games (Final Fantasy)....but when i saw this movie on the odyssey channal, I knew i had to see it again. Being the kind of person that dreams about stuff like fairies, dragons, unicorns, elves, and all of the others every since i can remember, the thought of me have this movie wasn't a want, it was a need. Most ppl bresth air but I fantasy and fictional characters. My favorite character in this movie was Miranda; she was such a real person. As skeptical as she was she finally figured out that all she had to do to get home was to believe in herself. As fictional as this movie is, there are also many thing in the movie that pertain to some of our real-life situations. Most truly great fantasy movie are like that. Take it from the expert. What I love most about fantasy is that it's so much greater than in the real-world, I mean the imagination of its limits reach higher than the sky and the sky is definately not the limit for this movie. If you haven't seen this movie I deeply recommend it.
