Editorial Review:
FACING ANOTHER LONELY CHRISTMAS, DREW WANTS TO REVISIT HIS CHILDHOOD HOME & RELIVE HOLIDAY MEMORIES. BUT WHEN HE GETS THERE HE FINDS ANOTHER FAMILY LIVING IN THE HOME. DREW OFFERS A NICE FINANCIAL REWARD TO THE FAMILY. BUT IS HIS CASH THE BEGINNING OF AN ANNOYING VISITOR WHO IS OVEREAGER TO CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS?
Description of Surviving Christmas:
Ben Affleck is well-cast as Drew Latham, a millionaire on the verge of nervous collapse, a man with no sense of self who tries to buy the trappings of life--including the family that just happens to be living in his childhood home. He jumps around with a plastic smile on his face, trying to impose himself on the bribed household, who--even though the parents are on the verge of divorce--are still more psychologically coherent than he is. Surviving Christmas has been unfairly trashed due to anti-Affleck sentiment in the post-Gigli era; though the movie eventually succumbs to bland formula, it has some moments of bracing dark comedy and genuine empathy, mostly thanks to James Gandolfini (The Sopranos, The Mexican) and Catherine O'Hara (A Mighty Wind, Beetlejuice) as the parents--two superb actors who could breathe life into any banal script. Also featuring Christina Applegate (Anchorman, View from the Top). --Bret Fetzer
Surviving Christmas Reviews:
Old-fashioned romantic comedy with a bit of a modern edge
2009-11-22 - I liked this movie with all its screwball family comedy... maybe the plot was a bit predictable (rich girl and parents who are snobs) but I liked Ben and Christina as the new lovers pretending to be brother and sister. And James and Catherine as the battling parents could have been MY parents! (Though the only bit of a stretch was how a seemingly working-class family lived in such a great house in such a nice neighborhood! LOL). This is the second time I'm rented it at the video place and have decided it is worth purchasing to watch yearly.
One of my FAVORITES!
2009-02-24 - What is with you anti "Surviving Christmas' people? It's an excellent script with modern day Capraesque overtones, a cast deserving of an equal review. Ben Affleck is a natural comedian. The other actors are teriffic as well."Drew Latham", truly sketches, shapes the family and situations.
Perhaps it's geared for and appreciated by we singles. It turns out to be a Wonderful Life despite the dysfunctional bumps along the way.
Hilarious! Let adults have their Christmas movie too!
Great Movie
2009-01-12 - If you Love the Lampoon Christmas you will love this movie. Great service and fast shipping.
Very lite and funny
2008-12-21 - This moving is great if you're looking for a lite hearted comedy for the Christmas season. It gives you the warm feeling at the end, which is what the Christmas season is all about. You don't have to overthink this one. Just sit back and enjoy!
It was a gift
2008-12-16 - I've never seen the movie myself but a coworker had looked all over for it and could'nt find it so I offered to order it for her, and she was thrilled
