Editorial Review:
Bernadette Peters opens this self-titled album with her usual "Broadway Baby" and includes some other show tunes, but she also samples country and rock & roll, accompanied by small combos, piano, or guitar. While it's a little different from what her fans are used to hearing, this ballad-heavy album shows Peters at her torchy best. The 50-minute CD, released in 1992, is a combination of tracks from her 1980 solo debut album and 1981's Now Playing. And that's an authentic Vargas portrait on the cover. --David Horiuchi
Bernadette Reviews:
Waited a long time for this one on CD!
2009-10-26 - Finally, the two scratchy albums I have from almost 30 years ago have been combined for one fabulous CD! Her versions of "If You Were The Only Boy", "Pearl's A Singer", and especially "Should've Never Let Him Go" make this a rare treat. Peter Allen also plays piano on some of the songs. Not only is her voice in perfect form but her subtle, angst-filled delivery is full of restraint and storytelling ala Streisand. No wonder this little powerhouse slays live audiences on stage. I ordered two copies since I knew this would be a limited release so don't miss this one. She really is our Broadway Baby!
A Masterpiece!
2009-07-24 - If you are able to buy this CD, you are in for a treat. I purchased it used from a company called, The Beat on the internet. It was shipped quickly and looked brand new when I received it. I first heard of this collection when I went on Bernadette Peters web site. I kept hearing a beautiful song called "Other Lady". I learned that these songs were recorded in 1980/81 before she became one of the biggest diva's. Although these songs are not from Broadway shows, it really shows the quality of her voice! After seeing her in several concerts and on stage in "Gypsy" and "Annie Get Your Gun" I am convinced she is one of the greatest actresses of our time. I was very lucky to meet her personally at the stage door and she was so down to earth and generous of her time. Bernadette's tenderness is truly expressed in these thirteen beautiful captivating songs. Bernadette, you are truly a gift from God! Keep singing! Your greatest fan!
Where's the song Chico's Girl?
2003-12-24 - The song Chico's Girl is on the record so why
the heck didn't they put it on the CD?
For whatever reason it stupid sucks!
great classic sound for bernadette
2002-07-16 - great album. I think this is her first non show album. it is a must for a true Ms. Peters fan's. great version of "I never thought i'd break" truly a touching song.
disappointing
2002-06-13 - I found this CD to be a disappointment. I enjoy Bernadette Peter's work but this album was not up to the usual standard I have come to expect.
The production on the album was poor and the quality of the songs was mediocre at best. The pace and phrasing of the album seemed off to me. The songs were all slow and lacking in emotion.
Ms Peter's voice was excellent as always. However the passion or feeling behind the songs seemed to be lacking.
Overall I would say the album is not up to Ms Peter's usual quality.
